K Kavitha

Synopsis: Explaining the purpose of her party, Kavitha said, “A political party must possess a political soul; it must have a clear agenda. The BRS party has lost the very soul of Telangana; that is why the Telangana Rashtra Sena has come into existence.”

Kalvakuntla Kavitha, former BRS MLC, has on Saturday, 25 April, launched her new political party Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS).

Along with announcing the name, Kavitha, daughter of former Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supremo K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter, also revealed the flag of the party.  The flag is in three colours — yellow, blue, and green. At the centre of the flag is a blue-coloured map of Telangana, and within it, the name TRS is written in English letters. At the bottom, there is a green stripe, in the middle of which the name Telangana Rashtra Sena is written in Telugu.

It is to be noted that the abbreviation, TRS, is the same as that of BRS’s old name Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

Kavitha was active during the Telangana statehood movement, and has led the socio-cultural organisation Jagruti.

She had quit BRS in September 2025, over differences with her brother, BRS working president KT Rama Rao, and her cousin former Minister Harish Rao.

Responding to the announcement, BRS dubbed the new party as duplicate. They further wrote on X: “Original is always original.”

Kavitha thanks people of Telangana

Kavitha, speaking to the media, said, “My heartfelt thanks go to the people of Telangana—the intellectuals, the thinkers, and all those who aspire for the development of the state. This is an unforgettable day in my life. I believe that the Divine has orchestrated events in such a way that we have all come together to work towards a common cause.”

Further paying respects, she added, “I pay my respects to the activists of the Telangana movement, to the families of the martyrs, and to all those who endured immense hardships—those who believed that the mere realization of statehood was a sufficient reward in itself.”

Emphasising on the role of Jagruti during the statehood movement, Kavitha noted, “It was the women of Jagruthi who laid the strong foundation upon which the Telangana movement was built. We fought hard and achieved statehood for Telangana. However, the Telangana of our dreams has not yet materialized.”

Criticism against BRS

Further criticising the BRS, she said, “Under the leadership of  KCR, the chariot of the Telangana movement has lost its way. The wheels of social justice have shattered into pieces. It pains me to admit that things have not unfolded in the manner in which they ought to have.”

“There have been tragic deaths among the Dalit community—a consequence of the greed surrounding the illegal sand mafia. People now live in fear, afraid even to speak freely over the telephone. We lived under the shadow of draconian surveillance. I tell you now: the Telangana we envisioned has not yet materialized. I feel ashamed to have been part of the family that governed during that era.”

“However, my life has been truly fulfilled by having played a role in achieving Telangana statehood. Merely offering an apology is insufficient to atone for my past complicity. One must work tirelessly to rectify those mistakes. It is for this very purpose that we are emerging as the Telangana Rashtra Sena. Struggles and movements can be far more effective when backed by political power and authority. That is precisely why this party has come before you,” Kavitha said, explaining the purpose of her party, and added, “A political party must possess a political soul; it must have a clear agenda. The BRS party has lost the very soul of Telangana; that is why the Telangana Rashtra Sena has come into existence.”

“By blending constitutional means and political power with mass movements, we will achieve a Telangana characterized by social justice. The Telangana Rashtra Sena has not come before you without a purpose,” she added.

Attack on BJP

Kavitha further trained guns at the BJP, claiming that the national party in principle, did not even support the formation of Telangana.

“Senior BJP leaders have claimed that the state was carved out by “killing the mother to save the child. An MP has even gone so far as to compare the formation of Telangana to the partition of India and Pakistan. When their top leadership speaks in such a manner, Telangana BJP MPs do not utter a single word of dissent. Even when the state is denied a single rupee in funds, BJP MPs remain silent,” said Kavitha.

“The BJP is fundamentally opposed to the very concept of social justice. They have delayed the Women’s Reservation Bill and stalled both the Backward Classes (BC) Bill and the Caste Census Bill. They have also weakened the Employment Guarantee Scheme, which provides essential support to the poor. Disregarding the spirit of federalism, they have annexed seven of our mandals. Yet, despite all this, BJP MPs continue to remain silent.”

She went on to challenge the BJP MPs to bring back the the five villages near Bhadrachalam into the fold of Telangana.

“If you truly consider yourselves sons of Telangana, bring back the five villages near Bhadrachalam into the fold of Telangana. Once the Polavaram project is completed, those villages will be submerged,” she added.
