Synopsis: MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha demanded that Telangana CM Revanth Reddy lead an all-party delegation to Delhi over the Banakacherla project. She also sought early approval of the 42 percent BC reservation bill pending with the President. Kavitha also welcomed Koppula Eshwar’s TBGKS appointment.
Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Thursday, 17 July, demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy lead an all-party delegation to Delhi, coinciding with the commencement of the Parliament session on 21 July, to pressure the Centre into protecting Telangana’s interests regarding the Banakacherla project.
Kavitha further demanded that the chief minister resign from his post for “shamelessly pandering” to Andhra Pradesh, thereby permanently compromising Telangana’s rights over the Godavari river waters.
Speaking to the media at her residence in Hyderabad, Kavitha criticized the meeting held in Delhi on Wednesday, 16 July, between the chief ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, claiming it signalled ominous developments for Telangana.
Revanth Reddy after the meeting stated, “The Banakacharla project was not part of the discussion, as Andhra Pradesh did not formally propose it during the meeting. Since there was no proposal to construct it, we had no reason to ask them to stop.”
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu in a post on X wrote: “The Chief Ministers of the Telugu states, Irrigation Ministers, Chief Secretaries, Irrigation Secretaries, Engineers, and the Union Water Resources Minister C.R. Patil held a meeting. Discussions regarding the Krishna and Godavari waters and the Polavaram-Banakacharla issues concerning both states took place in a friendly atmosphere. After the meeting, they spoke to the media about the matters discussed.”

Claiming that the Telangana chief minister agreed to the constitution of a committee to look into Banakacherla project, apart from other river water issues, Kavitha questioned, “Our chief minister denied that Banakacherla was discussed. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh minister for Irrigation claimed it was indeed discussed and that a committee would be formed to deliberate on the project. So, who is lying?”
It is unfortunate that Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has shamelessly bartered away the interests of the State on Banakacherla project.

Kavitha also questioned Revanth Reddy’s presence at the meeting, despite his earlier statement that he would boycott it if Banakacherla was on the agenda. “He not only attended but also arrived before his Andhra counterpart and gave him a warm welcome. The bonhomie between the two leaders was evident.”
Referring to Revanth Reddy’s earlier statement that his time in TDP was like college college days, Kavitha said, “He still appears to be in his ‘college days’. While he may not lose anything, the injustice caused to Telangana due to Banakacherla will be irreversible.”
She further alleged that both Revanth Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu have already decided to award the ₹85,000 crore Banakacherla project to Megha Engineering Ltd in exchange for commissions.
Kavitha warned that Telangana Jagruthi would explore all possible legal and democratic avenues, including approaching the courts, if the state government fails to sincerely oppose the project.
She also urged the delegation to make every possible effort to secure early clearance for the bill pending with the President of India, which seeks to provide 42 percent reservations for BCs in education, employment, and public life.
When asked about the lack of response from BRS leadership to the abusive remarks made against her by fellow MLC Teenmar Mallanna, Kavitha said his comments weren’t even worth discussing.
Regarding the BRS appointing a new in-charge for the Singareni Collieries Workers Union (TBGKS) — a role she had held as honorary president — Kavitha said she welcomed the appointment of senior leader Koppula Eshwar, noting his deep understanding of coal workers’ issues.
