KTR on the highlights CEC's findings

Synopsis: BRS Working President KT Rama Rao slammed the Telangana government over its handling of the Kancha Gachibowli land row. The former Telangana minister demanded central probe into the matter.

BRS Working President KT Rama Rao tore into the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government over its handling of the Kancha Gachibowli land row.

During a press conference on Thursday, 17 April, he welcomed the Supreme Court’s stern stand, which demanded a clear restoration plan the previous day and warned state officials of jail time if they obstructed the process.

KTR, as the leader is popularly known, stressed the revelations in the report submitted to the apex court by the Centrally Empowered Committee (CEC).

The report exposed deep gaps between the government’s narrative and ground reality, pointing to procedural violations, financial irregularities, and what it suspects was a deliberate attempt to flout environmental laws.

CEC’s scathing report

KTR said that if it were any other chief minister, they would have resigned out of shame. “However, it’s Revanth Anumula in power, and he hasn’t spoken about it yet,” KTR lamented.

He further called it a win for the students, people of Hyderabad, and environmental lovers everywhere.

“Yesterday’s hearing reaffirms the people’s trust in the Judiciary. In fact, the CEC confirmed everything we alleged regarding the case a few days ago,” he said.

He further detailed how the report stated that the ownership of the land prima facie seemed to lie with the University of Hyderabad. He also read from the CEC’s recommendation that no third-party interests should be brought upon the land until its ownership is cleared.

He emphasised the CEC’s observations regarding procedural lapses, wherein it suspects the TGIIC’s (Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation) intent as well. Furthermore, he stressed that the CEC suspects financial impropriety in the case.

“The state started filing cases against everyone claiming they were circulating AI-generated or fake videos online. Justice Gavai has also taken note of these videos. Revanth Reddy is the kind of person who’d even file a case against Justice Gavai for that,” KTR lamented.

“The report reveals that apart from the state has also mortgaged a lake as part of the 400 acres. Have you seen any government which mortgages a lake?” he questioned. He also reiterated the CEC’s recommendation for an independent investigation into the matter.

Demands for an investigation

The former Telangana minister said he heard Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Haryana regarding the deforestation in Kancha Gachibowli.

“We have written to the CBI, RBI, Serious Fraud Investigation Office, and the Central Vigilance Commission. If you feel that deeply, we request that you conduct an independent investigation into the issue,” KTR appealed to the prime minister.

“We will wait patiently until the end of the month, we will also submit representations to the agencies in person. However, if you fail to act, the people of Telangana will have to accept that the BJP is simply a party of words, not action. I don’t understand what hesitation the central government has when ABVP and local BJP leaders themselves protested on the issue,” KTR said, calling on the BJP to take action.”

“Furthermore, let this incident serve as an awakening to all those behaving like Revanth Reddy’s private army. To all the police officers who are filing cases indiscriminately against people for reposting or criticising the government,  we will take you to court,” he warned.

He further elaborated on an apparent attitude problem with the government.

“When you’re in power, you must take criticism in the same stride as praise. This government arrested a Dalit farmer for criticising the government, and also tried to blame officers for its shortcomings. That is not how you do things,” KTR added.
