BRS MLC K Kavitha.

A day after CBI officials grilled her for more than seven and a half hours, BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Monday, 12 December, said there was no question of going on the backfoot regardless of what the Central government did to rein in those who spoke against it.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader — also Telangana Chief Minister and party chief K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter — was speaking at a wide-ranging meeting of the non-profit organisation Telangana Jagruthi in Hyderabad.

Kavitha, who is also a president of the Telangana JAgruthi, said it is now expected of Central agencies to go after the detractors of the Union government.

“These raids are happening not just on me but on all Opposition parties throughout the country, from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari,” she said.

Kavitha expresses anger

Referring to some activists sympathising with her for the CBI questioning, she said neither she nor any Telangana woman would cry in the face of any attack from the Centre.

“It is not tears but fire that would come out of their eyes,” she said as Telangana Jagruthi cadres cheered her.

She said she was not afraid of the Central agencies. “They are wasting our time. Let them do whatever they want to do. But with whatever time they leave us with, let us work hard and assert ourselves,” said Kavitha.

“Don’t forget that we are from a state that is known for its fighting spirit,” she added.

Kavitha also said that the time had come once again for the activists to move forward and help the movement for ushering in an India that everyone dreamt of.

‘Have to protect democracy’

The BJP had been trying to overthrow democratically elected governments in several states, and the news media was toeing the line of the national ruling party, said the BRS leader.

“The Centre is riding roughshod over democracy. We have to protect our democratic systems and institutions, which in turn, would protect us,” she said.

The former MP said the people of Telangana should take the initiative to see that the country moved forward on the right path.

The country was faring very badly on all indices, she claimed.

“The value of the Indian rupee has been plummeting inexorably while on several development indices, there has been nothing that India would be proud of,” she said.

She called upon the cadres to teach the BJP-led Central government a fitting lesson in the next elections, which are about a year away. “Let us work hard from today itself,” she said.

She recalled how, during the course of the Telangana movement, the Telangana Jagruthi had brought to light the kind of discrimination the culture of Telangana had been subjected to.

In fact, there were days when people used to feel a little shy about celebrating the Bathukamma festival but, today, it is a household festival, she said.

“Several artists are participating in the festivals that capture the essence of our culture,” she said.
