Synopsis: BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao will interact with his party members on 19 February. The meeting will primarily focus on the alleged anti-people policies of the Congress government in the state and its failures. There will be a comprehensive discussion on the party’s action plan to expose these failures.
Ahead of the local body elections in the state, former Telangana chief minister and BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao — KCR — is all set to interact with his party members.
Although there are indications that the local body elections may be further delayed due to the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) and intermediate examinations and the advancing summer, the party has nonetheless decided to hold its extended executive meeting on 19 February.
BRS Working President KT Rama Rao, popularly known as KTR, announced that the former chief minister would interact with party leaders and workers at the meeting at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad.
The meeting will be attended by state executive members, district party presidents, current and former MPs, members of the Legislative Council, MLAs, former corporation chairpersons, district Zilla Parishad chairpersons, District Co-operative Central Bank (DCCB) and District Co-operative Marketing Society (DCMS) presidents, and party constituency in-charges.
At the extended executive meeting, extensive discussions will be held on organising the party’s silver jubilee celebrations, as the BRS is completing 25 years since its inception. Issues such as party membership registration and strengthening the party structure will also be discussed.
According to KTR, the meeting will primarily focus on the alleged anti-people policies of the Congress government in the state and its failures. There will be a comprehensive discussion on the party’s action plan to expose these failures.
He emphasised that strategies and policies will be discussed to raise awareness among the people about protecting their rights and securing the promises made by the government. The meeting will serve as a platform for the party leadership, workers, and members to deliberate on these crucial issues.
The meeting assumes importance in the wake of the BRS deciding to stay away from the elections for three MLC seats, which are scheduled for 27 February.
The party has stated that it was not supporting any candidate in the elections. The reason given by the party is that it had not applied its mind to the elections and did not bother enrolling members as voters for the three constituencies.
Party insiders say that the BRS’ decision to stay away from the MLC polls was a tactical move. The party does not want to create the impression that it is on shaky ground should the verdict go against it.
However, this decision comes at a high price, as there is always the possibility that the party cadres might interpret the tactical retreat as a sign of a lack of confidence in winning the elections, potentially triggering defections to other parties.
Although the Congress’s popularity appears to be waning due to its inability to fully deliver on its promises — particularly the ₹2 lakh crop loan waiver and the payment of Rythu Bharosa amounts — the BRS does not appear very confident about its chances in the MLC elections. The party believes the dynamics of MLC polls are different from other elections.
One of the three elections is for a graduate constituency, which is often seen as an indicator of public sentiment. The BRS could have at least contested this seat, but it decided to skip this election as well. If the party had contested, it would have gained insight into its position compared to the Congress’s declining popularity.
The BJP is likely to benefit from the absence of the BRS in the race for the three seats, as anti-Congress votes may consolidate in its favour.
