Police said the arrested people have criminal background, and faced cases registered in multiple police stations.
Synopsis: After unlawfully procuring babies from vulnerable families, the gang would illegally sell them to affluent childless couples for large sums through an organised chain, exploiting economically weaker sections of society for unlawful gain.
The Miyapur police in northwest Hyderabad busted an interstate human trafficking network and rescued two infants from the gang.
Besides rescuing the infants, the police, jointly with the Special Operations Team (SOT), Shamshabad, arrested 11 of the alleged gangsters. The authorities carried out the operation based on credible information on Wednesday, 24 December.
The prime suspect and his associates were arrested from various places in the Miyapur police limits.
Cyberabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Madhapur zone) Ritiraj said the accused formed an organised gang with the common intention of illegally procuring and selling infants for monetary gain.
“The accused identify poor families from different parts of the country who are unable to meet the basic needs of their newborn infants and induce them to sell their babies by offering attractive amounts,” the officer said in a statement.
After unlawfully procuring babies from vulnerable families, the gang would illegally sell them to affluent childless couples for large sums through an organised chain, exploiting economically weaker sections of society for unlawful gain.
The primary accused, V Babu Reddy, 49, is a resident of Medchal, Malkajgiri district, and works as an IVF agent. He was previously arrested by Alwal, Cyberabad and Devarakonda police in the Suryapet district.
Venkipally Gangadhar Reddy, 39, a resident of Secunderabad from Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, has reportedly been involved in 18 cases across the Cyberabad, Rachakonda, and Hyderabad jurisdictions.
His criminal record included five confirmed cases involving violations of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Indian Penal Code.
Whilst Gangadhar Reddy is not directly accused in the 13 cases registered at the Gopalpuram police station under the Hyderabad Commissionerate, he is a close associate of the accused, Harsha Roy, who faces charges in multiple cases at that station.
Roy is an accused in FIR No. 147/2025 under sections 316, 335, 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections 38, 39 and 40 of the Surrogacy Act, 2021. The connection between the two accused highlights the extensive network operating across different jurisdictions.
In the present offence, Gangadhar Reddy reached out to his associates Laxmi, Sangeetha and Harsha Roy to procure an infant baby from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, by paying the biological parents through middlemen. The baby was to be sold later in Hyderabad to childless couples for a large amount.
Similarly, Babu Reddy contacted Gangadhar Reddy for an infant, who in turn reached out to his associates Gunde Sujatha, Anuradha, Jyothi, Madhavi and Shobba.
They procured a baby from Ramanpet, Siddipet district, through middlemen. The baby was procured to be sold to affluent needy couples in Hyderabad.
The accused were arrested by the sleuths of SOT, Cyberabad and Miyapur police while selling the infants. The rescued infants were handed over to Sishu Vihar, Ameerpet, for safe custody.
The other accused in the case include Daram Laxmi, 28, Ram Hari Roy, 37, Kummari Harsha Roy, 31, Sangeeta Debi, 33, Gudepu Sujatha, 40, Suraboina Anuradha, 55, Esarapu Jyothi, 35, V Madhavi, 28, and Pothula Sobha, 44.
Police records revealed that several of the accused have previous cases registered against them under various sections of the IPC, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Juvenile Justice Act and the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021, with multiple cases filed at police stations across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
