Interior designer booked for running over car on 3-year-old in Hyderabad

In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a three-year-old girl was run over by a car and killed in the Lecturer’s Colony in the Hayathnagar area of Hyderabad on the morning of Thursday, 25 May.

In the CCTV footage of the incident that went viral on social media, a man can be seen running a car over the sleeping child after taking a left turn while parking his vehicle.

The accused has been identified as Sri Rama Krishna, an interior designer who is a resident of the Lecturer’s Colony.

A case has been registered against Krishna in the Hayathnagar Police Station, but no arrest has been made so far, as per the police.

What happened?

The Hayathnagar police said that the child Lakshmi’s mother Kavitha, a daily wager, was working at a construction site near the apartment building. She brought the girl to the parking area of the apartments.

“She did so to protect her from the heat. She put the girl to sleep on the ground. In the meantime, the accused entered the parking with his car and failed to notice the child on the ground and ran over her while parking his vehicle at his usual spot,” Station House Officer (SHO) H Venkateshwarlu told South First.

Both of Lakshmi’s parents — mother Kavitha and father Raju — are construction workers who migrated from the Kalaburagi district in Karnataka to Hyderabad around five months ago in search of work.

The couple arrived in the city with their seven-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.

The wife of the accused, Krishna, works as a sub-inspector with the Telangana Prohibition & Excise Department.

He has been booked by the Hayathnagar police under IPC Section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence).

“As the punishment is under seven years, we need the court’s permission before arresting him,” SHO Venkateshwarlu said.

Not the first such incident

On 20 February this year, two children were run over by an SUV in Hyderabad’s Chitrapuri Colony while it was coming out from the basement parking lot.

While one child, Bhavin Surya, sustained minor injuries, the other, seven-year-old Jeevansh, had to be hospitalised and was said to be in a critical condition.

In another dreadful incident on 21 February, a four-year-old boy named Pradeep was mauled to death at Amberpet in Hyderabad by a pack of stray dogs.

While the terrified boy tried to escape, the dogs closed in and pushed him to the ground. They then started pulling at his clothes as the child struggled to break free.

Every time he tried to get up, the dogs attacked him and brought him down to the floor. Soon, they overpowered him and bit him all over.
