IMD issues orange alert for 8 Telangana districts on 5, 6 September; citizens urged to avoid trees

IMD issues orange alert for eight Telangana districts on 5 & 6 September, citizens urged to avoid shelter under trees

Amidst the incessant rains lashing several parts of Telangana for the straight second day, the Hyderabad Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, 4 September, issued an orange alert for at least eight districts and a yellow alert for several others for the next two days.

This comes a little more than a month after floods wreaked havoc as heavy rains lashed the state in the later part of July.

8 districts under Orange alert

The IMD forecasted that eight districts — Jagityal, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, and Nagarkurnool — were likely to witness “heavy to very heavy rainfall” on Monday as well as Tuesday. It issued an orange alert for these districts.

For Tuesday, along with these districts, the IMD also placed Warangal, Hanumakonda, Janagaon, and Rajanna Sirsilla under orange alert.

The IMD also placed over a dozen districts, including Hyderabad, under yellow alert (heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.6 mm) for the next two days.

These districts are Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Janagaon, Siddipet, Kamareddy, Wanaparthi, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal.

The IMD said that the torrential rains would be accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The heavy spells of rain, which started on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, continued in Telangana on Monday.

The IMD advised people to take shelter under pucca structures and avoid areas under trees. It also urged people to stay away from weak walls.

27 mm instead of normal 5 mm

As per the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the Mugpal village in the Nizamabad district received the highest rainfall of 147.9 mm till Monday.

The TSDPS added that the Nirmal, Jagtial, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, and Rajanna Sircilla districts received very heavy rainfall simultaneously.

It added that the state received 27 mm of rainfall against the regular 5 mm in the past 24 hours

In the area that falls under the jurisdiction of the GHMC, Ramachandrapuram in Sangareddy district saw 7.8 mm of rainfall.

The TSDPS said the cyclonic circulation causing the rain now lay over the northeast of the Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood areas and extended up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.

“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours. The trough runs from the Cyclonic Circulation over the Northeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood to Telangana across north coastal Andhra Pradesh between 1.5 and 3.1 km above mean sea level,” it said.

Traffic movement disrupted

Similar to several past instances, many users took to social media to point out the slow traffic movement in Hyderabad due to the rain.

The Enforcement Vigilance & Disaster Management team addressed several water logging complaints at places such as Bandlaguda, Lingampally, Gachibowli, and Shaikhpet.

At other places such as Malakpet, Malkajgiri, and Langar Houz, uprooted trees were being cleared for free movement of commuters.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Traffic Police kept citizens updated about the flow of traffic movement in the city through social media.
