Telangana floods

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday, 15 July, rescued two men who were stranded for more than 12 hours in the flood-hit Chennur constituency in the Mancherial district of Telangana.

The rescue operation was conducted after the IAF received a request from the Telangana government around 10.30 am on Thursday.

According to the IAF, the Telangana government requested the rescue of the two men stranded who were on a water tank, which was surrounded by floodwater from the Godavari river.

The IAF quickly responded and, a Chetak helicopter was on its way in less than an hour to the affected area near Mancherial, said the defence authorities.

Rescue operation

On reaching the location, the pilots assessed the situation and conducted a winch operation to airlift the two individuals.

They were then flown to the National Thermal Power Corporation plant at Ramanagudamn in the Pedapalli district.

The authorities added that winching operations require the pilot of a helicopter to maintain an absolutely steady hover over an area. This task is more difficult over water as the pilots do not have sufficient visual references to maintain steadiness.

The rescued persons are said to be shepherds, who were stuck in the floods while searching for their cattle, and climbed atop the water tank.

The Indian Navy on Thursday conducted similar relief and rescue operations in North-Eastern Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district. It has been cut off due to the Godavari river’s floods.

“In response to a request received from the Eluru district administration for rescue and relief operations due to massive flooding of the Godavari River, the Indian Navy launched two medium-lift UH3H helicopters from INS Dega at Visakhapatnam on 14 July for providing humanitarian assistance to the water-locked areas of Koida (seven habitations) and Katkur (nine habitations) in the Velairpadu mandal,” the Navy said.

It added that so far more than 2,000 kg of relief material — essential food items, medicines, milk, and bread — had been delivered by the helicopters to the marooned villagers.

Seven NDRF teams each in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, along with the SDRF, have been deployed to carry out rescue operations and help in relief work.

According to the reports, nearly 32,000 people in both the states — 20,000 in Telangana and 12,000 in Andhra Pradesh — have been shifted to various shelter camps.

Alarming water levels

The Godavari river is currently flowing at an alarming water level of 61 feet, and at one point on Thursday peaked at 62.20 feet — nearly reaching 10 feet above the 53-foot danger mark.

As per Central Water Commission (CWC) reports, the river, which touched its highest ever level of 75.6 feet on 16 August, 1986, at Bhadrachalam in the Bhadradi Kothagudem district of Telangana, might reach the perilous 70-foot mark by Friday.
