Hyderabad wakes up to heavy rains; roads waterlogged

In view of the rains, Hyderabad traffic police advised the citizens to exercise caution and venture out only if necessary.

Hyderabad rains

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms lashed many parts of Hyderabad on Monday, 19 August, and continued till the wee hours of Tuesday, 20 August. Torrential downpours and loud thunders woke up the city at around 4:30 am. While the intensity of the rain reduced soon after, the continuous downpour caused waterlogging in many parts of the city.

Chanchalguda, LB Nagar, Vidyanagar, Champapet, Shaikpet, Saifabad, Yosufguda, and Malakpet were primarily affected by the heavy downpour.

Till 8 am on Tuesday, Saroornagar recorded the maximum rain in the city with 132 mm, followed by Yosufguda with 120 mm, followed by Rajendranagar with 114 mm.

The Hyderabad traffic police advised the citizens to exercise caution and venture out only if necessary. Many schools across the city have declared a holiday on Tuesday.

The GHMC staff have started the cleaning operations, and are trying to ease the traffic flow caused by waterlogging.

Light to moderate rains

According to the IMD forecast, on Tuesday, Hyderabad will have a generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers at times intense spells very likely to occur in the city.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 21 August, Hyderabad will experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds up to 30-40 kmph.

Telangana rains

Meanwhile, the rest of the state was also affected by rains on Monday. Two persons died after lightning struck them in separate incidents in Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana.

A 40-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl died at different places in Gattu and Maldakal of Gadwal district after being struck by lightning at agricultural fields when it was raining, a senior police official said.

A public transport bus was stuck in flood water under a Road Under Bridge (RUB) in Nizamabad and the passengers were brought out of it by authorities and local residents.

The IMD predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Hyderabad and other districts on Tuesday.
