Hyderabad’s Osmania General Hospital performs India’s first five-organ transplant on single patient

The recipient had been suffering from a rare and severe gastrointestinal condition for several years, leaving him unable to digest food normally. Doctors said his condition had progressively worsened and that transplantation was the only viable treatment option.

Synopsis: Doctors at the Osmania General Hospital have performed India’s first simultaneous five-organ (multi-visceral) transplant on a single patient. The 36-hour surgery involved transplanting the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small bowel and right colon into a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla, marking a significant milestone in government healthcare.

Doctors at the state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad have performed, what the Telangana government claimed, India’s first simultaneous five-organ — or multi-visceral — transplant on a single patient.

The procedure involved transplanting the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small bowel and right colon into a 30-year-old engineer from Sircilla. The government said in a statement that the surgery lasted nearly 36 hours and was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising transplant surgeons, anaesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, critical care specialists, nursing staff and technicians.

Only option

Hospital officials said the patient had been suffering from a rare and severe gastrointestinal condition for several years, leaving him unable to digest food normally. He had been dependent on intravenous nutritional support and had sought treatment at multiple private hospitals before approaching OGH. Doctors said his condition had progressively worsened and that transplantation was the only viable treatment option.

A multi-visceral transplant is among the most complex procedures in abdominal transplant surgery because it involves replacing several organs of the digestive system during a single operation. In this case, doctors simultaneously transplanted the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small bowel and right colon.

The hospital said extensive planning preceded the surgery, with multiple departments coordinating organ retrieval, preservation, transplantation and post-operative critical care.

Significant for Telangana

Congratulating the medical team, Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha said the successful surgery marked a significant milestone for government healthcare in the state.

“For the first time in the country, a transplant of five organs was successfully performed on a single patient at Osmania Hospital,” the minister said.

He said the achievement had further enhanced the reputation of Telangana’s public healthcare system and congratulated the team involved in the procedure.

“The dedication and coordinated efforts of the entire medical team made this complex surgery possible. This achievement demonstrates that government hospitals are capable of providing advanced medical care,” he said.

The minister added that the Telangana government would continue to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and expand access to advanced medical services.

The Osmania Junior Doctors Association also congratulated the transplant team, saying the procedure reflected the capabilities of doctors working in government hospitals and marked an important development in transplant medicine in the country.

Hospital authorities are expected to provide more details on the patient’s recovery and the clinical aspects of the procedure in the coming days.
