Synopsis: Two people were killed and one injured when a seven-storey building under construction collapsed in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, on Saturday. Hours later, two students were injured when a temporary structure collapsed at the pre-release event of Yash-starrer Toxic at Malla Reddy University. The building collapse has also prompted authorities to scrutinise unauthorised and potentially unsafe constructions in Anjaiah Nagar.

Two people were killed and one injured when a seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, on Saturday afternoon, 22 August. Separately, two students were injured hours later when a temporary structure near the stage collapsed during the pre-release event of Yash-starrer Toxic at Malla Reddy University.

The Gachibowli building collapsed around 1 pm, damaging an adjoining structure and trapping people under the debris, according to the Telangana Fire and Disaster Response Department. The two deceased were suspected to be workers at the construction site. The injured person was rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital.

Fire and Disaster Response personnel reached the site with specialised rescue equipment and began search operations. Using equipment including a Victim Location Camera, rescue teams detected people trapped beneath the rubble. Two bodies were subsequently located and recovered.

At the Malla Reddy University event later that night, several students were seen in videos climbing onto a temporary structure installed for sound equipment moments before it gave way, triggering panic.

Of the two injured students, one, a woman, was reportedly unconscious briefly after the impact.

Yash was addressing the gathering when the structure collapsed. He reportedly paused after noticing the commotion and enquired about the students’ condition before continuing.

Earlier action against collapsed building

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has suspended a Town Planning Building Officer (TPBO) after an unauthorised multi-storey structure collapsed in Gachibowli, killing two people.

Commissioner G Srijana issued the suspension order on 22 August, holding U Santosh Kumar, TPBO of Circle 50, Madhapur, responsible for failing to halt illegal construction at a property in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli village, Serilingampally mandal. He has been directed to remain within the local jurisdiction and not leave headquarters without the Commissioner’s permission.

Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner G Srijana said officials had received a complaint against the building nearly six months ago, after which construction work was stopped and the structure seized. Construction, however, resumed on Friday after remaining halted for around four months.

HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath, who inspected the site, said several buildings in Anjaiah Nagar had allegedly been constructed close to a nala without mandatory setbacks or proper permissions. Some were multi-storey structures built on plots as small as 50 square yards, raising concerns over their structural safety.

HYDRAA and the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation will conduct a special drive in Anjaiah Nagar over the next few days to identify unauthorised constructions, buildings without the required setbacks and structures that could endanger residents. Action will be taken against buildings found to have violated construction and safety regulations.

Ranganath inspected several buildings in the locality with Srijana and HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah and reviewed the rescue operations.

The collapse also damaged the adjoining Jayadarshini Apartments. Residents of the affected blocks were advised not to stay inside the structure overnight. Ranganath examined the building, inspected its floors and interacted with residents. The debris is to be removed before the structural strength of the building is assessed and certified.

Regional Fire Officer Sudhakar Rao said residents would be allowed to return only after a stability assessment by the GHMC confirmed that the structure was safe. The assessment is scheduled for Sunday.
