A video of a Telangana police official assaulting a lorry driver in Hyderabad has surfaced online causing an uproar on social media.

The video showed the traffic official slapping the lorry driver on Narsapur Highway for stopping in the “no-parking” zone.

The official, identified as Jeedimetla Traffic Sub-Inspector (SI) Yadagiri, was seen hurling abuses at the driver who had to pull over due to a technical snag.

The incident which took place near Gandi Maisamma in Quthbullapur has caused the Cyberabad police to catch flak which was followed by the transfer of the official on Thursday, 18 July.

KTR questions police action

Even though the driver tried to explain the situation Yadagiri can be seen behaving crudely, holding the driver’s hair before slapping the driver and hurling abuses.

The video has gone viral after it and drew the ire of netizens who slammed the official for a “clear case of power abuse”.

BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) brought attention to the incident on X, noting its repetitive nature.

Calling it “garbage behaviour” he reminded the police that they are meant to serve the citizens. He expressed his disdain, calling the entire ordeal inappropriate.

“I hope you conduct sensitisation classes to change the behaviour of the policemen who are in direct contact with citizens,” he posted.

Action against the official

Meanwhile, the Telangana police quickly responded to KTR’s post, confirming that the event took place within their jurisdiction.

“Disciplinary action has been taken against the responsible officer, who has since been transferred from that station,” Telangana police said on X while assuring that they are committed to serving the public “24/7”.

Subsequently, many social media users amplified the incident with some acknowledging the quick action while others expressed distrust questioning whether any just decision would be made.

“The problem is that such investigations will not reach their logical end,” one user reacted.

“Sensitisation classes can play a key role in fostering better interactions between police and citizens,” a user posted echoing KTR’s views.

The user also noted that the police must reflect on their conduct.
