Return of WWE: Hyderabad to host its first WWE Superstar Spectacle on 8 September

WWE, the globally renowned entertainment phenomenon, has announced its return to India after seven years with a WWE Superstar Spectacle.

This is the first time that Hyderabad will host it. The venue is the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium (Gachibowli Indoor Stadium), and the date is Friday, 8 September.

This will be in collaboration with Telangana Sports Department along with event organiser BookMyShow and WWE.

Poster launch

Minister for Sports and Youth Services V Srinivas Goud — with Principal Secretary Shailaja Ramaiyer and Telangana State Sports Authority Chairman Dr Anjaneya Goud — launched the poster of the WWE Superstar Spectacle on the evening of Sunday, 13 August.

Beloved WWE’s Superstars — like World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley, WWE Tag Team Champions Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, Drew McIntyre, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Matt Riddle, Ludwig Kaiser and Intercontinental Champion General Gunther — are expected to grace the stage.

Indian professional wrestlers, such as Yuvraj Singh Dhesi, who performs under the ring name Jinder Mahal, Rinku Singh Rajput under the ring name Veer Mahaan or simply Veer, and Saurav Gurjar performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Sanga, are also expected.

Fans react

WWE was in New Delhi in 2017. As per the data report of WWE, Hyderabad is the biggest market for it, which is why it chose Hyderabad.

The organisers also said Hyderabad was buzzing with all sectors — be it sport, technology, or any event.

A BookMyShow official said there would be 28 global players who would participate in the Hyderabad event. The players will be reaching Hyderabad on the morning of 8 September.

Around 90 percent of the tickets were sold out on the announcing day: 4 August.

The price categories of tickets are ₹5,000 for general, ₹7,500, ₹12,500 and finally ₹15,000. Those buying the costliest ticket would also have an opportunity for a meet-and-greet with the wrestlers.

Karthik, a fan of WWE, told South First, “I checked BookMyShow twice for details the day it was announced, but it said Friday and it is a working day. A weekend would be exciting to see our favourite players in the ring.”

“The show has been on TV for most of us. Unlike cricket, we don’t get to see players and as a resident of Hyderabad, I — along with a group of my friends — am excited to see the champions in the flesh,” said Vijay, another fan.

One of the parents, whose 14-year-old is a big watcher of WWE, said, “It was I who had to book a ticket because it is expensive and my son keeps tracking the championship games. So, with such athletes visiting Hyderabad, I thought my son will have a great time. It has become easy for us to go as it is in the evening.”

However, a few enthusiasts shared concerns over the ticket prices.
