In a series of incidents that raised alarm over the law-and-order situation in Hyderabad, the city witnessed five murders in just 24 hours — including a double murder.

Two transgender friends were killed in a double murder in the Tappachabutra Police Station limits, and two homeless people were found murdered at separate places under the Mailardevpally Police Station on the intervening night of 20-21 June.

The fifth murder occurred in the Chaderghat area, where a man was chased down and hacked to death in broad daylight on Wednesday, 21 June.

Transpersons murdered in Dai Bagh

The two transgender persons — Syed Yousuf aka Dolly and Mohammad Riyazuddin alias Sofiya — were found murdered in Dai Bagh in the Tappachabutra Police Station limits.

The two were reportedly attacked at around 1 am on Wednesday. They were bludgeoned with stones and stabbed, resulting in them dying on the spot, said the police.

“Both the deceased are transgender persons aged between 25 and 30,” a police official said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, the Tappachabutra police said that the perpetrators might have been intimately involved with the duo.

According to the police, Dolly was involved in a relationship with a man named Syed Inayath, and they had some disagreements.

“Inayath is said to have asked Dolly to marry him, but Dolly refused. They used to have fights over this. This might have been the reason behind the murder, according to the family of Dolly,” the Tappachabutra Police Station’s Station House Officer (SHO) Sunkari Sreenivasa Rao told South First.

The police said they were in the process of identifying the suspects, and added that they also found the knife used to stab the victims.

Dolly’s brother Syed Khaja, however, denied any relationship between Inayath and his “brother”.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), around 7 pm Inayath called Yousuf (Dolly) and asked that they meet. They met with some friends. This is not the handiwork of just one person,” Khaja told South First, adding: “We demand justice.”

Revenge killing, say activists

Meanwhile, transgender activists South First spoke to claimed that the double murder was a revenge killing by the family of the late partner of Sofiya.

“Sofiya’s partner, according to the police, died by suicide last month. His family had threatened Sofiya and Dolly, claiming that they murdered him. The whole transgender community suspects that family’s hand in this case,” a transgender activist said.

A double-murder case was registered under Section 302 read with Section 34 of the IPC, and further investigations were on, the cops said.

Asked about the allegations levelled by the transgender community, Hyderabad Southwest Zone DCP Kiran Khare told South First that the police were probing all possible angles regarding the murder, and would be making arrests soon.

Homeless people killed in Mailardevpally

“The two homeless people who were sleeping on footpaths were killed after unidentified persons hit them with boulders while they were asleep at different places in Mailardevpally,” Mailardevpally Police Station SHO P Madhu told South First.

The police are yet to identify the deceased persons.

Madhu added that they were verifying the motives behind the murders, and also if there was any link between this and the killing of the two transgender persons.

Further investigation regarding the murders is underway.
