Synopsis: While the Cherlapally Police Station confirmed the arrests and seizure, they questioned the valuation of the haul, noting that it might not be worth ₹12,000 crore as reported by the Maharashtra Police.

A drug cartel worth ₹12,000 crore was busted in Hyderabad’s Cherlapally Industrial Area, where Maharashtra police uncovered a massive narcotic factory.

The Mira Bhayandar Police raided the location following a month-long investigation stemming from the seizure of ₹25 lakh worth of drugs in their jurisdiction.

With 12 arrests taking place – including the owner of the factory, chemical experts assisting in production, and a foreign national – the cops are continuing their investigation, probing into any possible international links to the Mephedrone ring.

12 arrests, 32,000 litres of chemicals, 1,000 kg powder

The case began about a month ago when police arrested a foreign national in Mira Bhayandar with drugs worth ₹25 lakh. Subsequent probe led officers to a facility in Hyderabad, which was found to be stockpiled with nearly 32,000 litres of liquid chemicals and about 1,000 kg of chemical powder.

The drug, Mephedrone, is a synthetic stimulant classified illegal in India under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. It reportedly produces effects similar to cocaine and MDMA, including heightened energy, euphoria, and alertness, and is highly addictive.

Speaking to the press, Mira Bhayander Commissioner of Police Niket Kaushik, reported that there were 12 arrests so far, with potential for more. He elaborated on the case, deeming it a win in the fight against drugs in Maharashtra.

“This operation began about a month ago, with he arrest of a drug-carrying foreign national in Mira Bhayandar. Our probe revealed that the factory was based in Telangana in the Cherlapally Industrial Area,” he began.

“The plant was operating like any other in the area, where numerous other plants were producing normal industrial chemicals. Yet, we seized close to 32,000 litres of chemical raw material alongside about 1,000 kg of chemical powders,” he reported.

“We have arrested 12 people in the case, including the owner of the factory and chemical experts. We estimate the value of these drugs, as per international prices, to be at about ₹12,000 Crore,” he added.

“We are also investigating any potential foreign links. This plant was responsible for drug distribution not just in Mira Bhayandar but across Maharashtra,” Kaushik said.

While the Cherlapally Police Station confirmed the arrests and seizure, they questioned the valuation of the haul, noting that it might not be worth ₹12,000 crore as reported by the Maharashtra Police.

The Mira Bhayandar Police stated that probe is ongoing, focusing on the factory’s financing, international links, and potential accomplices in both Maharashtra and Telangana.
