Arrest

The Hyderabad City Police on Saturday, 9 July, arrested a suspended officer on charges of raping a woman and later attempting to murder her to hide evidence of the sex crime.

The arrested officer has been identified as Inspector K Nageshwara Rao.

The accused served as station house officer (SHO) of the Maredpally Police Station in Hyderabad.

A senior police officer said, “The accused inspector was arrested from the Pedda Amberpet village in the Ranga Reddy district.”

The Vanasthalipuram police have booked Rao under IPC Sections 452 (house trespass), 376(2) (attempt to rape), 307(attempt to murder), and 365 (kidnap), as well as Section 30 of the Arms Act of 1959.

He has since been sent to judicial remand for 15 days, and is currently lodged in Cherlapalli jail.

According to police, a woman on 8 July lodged a complaint against the inspector, claiming he outraged her modesty and attempted to murder her.

The survivor in her complaint said the inspector allegedly called her on 6 July and demanded that she fulfil his sexual desires.

“On 7 July night, he broke into my house and raped me,” she added.

According to the police, the complainant’s husband stood up to the accused on learning about the incident.

“The accused took the couple at gunpoint and commanded them to leave the city immediately or face dire consequences,” the Hyderabad police said.

A senior police officer said, “The complainant further informed us that the couple was forced into a car, and managed to escape only after the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident.”

Conspiracy

According to the officer, the survivor also informed them that in 2018 her husband was arrested by Rao and was slapped with several cases.

“She informed us that her husband was not sent to jail but was appointed caretaker of his farmhouse,” added the officer.

He said the survivor’s husband told the cops that the accused attempted to rape his wife on earlier occasions as well.

“The survivor’s husband further informed us that soon after they warned Rao, a few police personnel abducted him from the farmhouse and clicked his pictures with marijuana. He was warned not to inform his wife about the inspector’s advances, else he would be framed in a drug case,” added the officer.
