The Hyderabad police arrested a Sub-Inspector posted in Siddipet Commissionerate on the charges of cheating a 23-year-old woman under the pretext of marriage on Sunday, 18 February.
According to the police, Arun (29), a 2020 batch officer, served at the Saidabad police station two years back.
A case was registered under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 376 (rape) and 417 (Whoever cheats shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both) at the Saidabad police station.
The accused cop was produced before the magistrate on Sunday and sent on a 14-day judicial remand.
Raghavender, SHO Saidabad, told South First, “While Arun was a trainee at the Saidabad police station, he met the young woman after which they exchanged numbers and got involved in a romantic relationship. Both of them met several times before Arun was transferred to Siddipet.”
The accused cop reportedly continued to be in touch with the woman even after being transferred to Siddipet and reportedly harassed her.
However, when the woman proposed marriage, the SI backtracked. “He was about to get married to another woman,” DCP SouthEast Zone, D Janaki told South First.
She said the accused cop has not been placed on suspension so far. “Any action will be taken once the departmental report is submitted,” Janaki said.
The woman was left distressed by this and complained to the SI at the Saidabad police station.
In July 2023, a senior police officer was booked for allegedly stalking a woman employed in the state-run power distribution company, Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).
The woman stated that while she was preparing for national competitions during 2020-2021 at Saroornagar Stadium in the city, the officer told her that they were conducting classes and asked her to attend.
As he was a senior police officer, she agreed to attend. He also took her phone number, she said in her complaint.
The officer was booked under IPC Section 354-D (stalking) at the Chaitanyapuri Police Station in Hyderabad then.
