The Cyberabad Metropolitan Police on Monday, 1 August, arrested six people from the Outer Ring Road in Hyderabad for allegedly peddling drugs, and seized marijuana worth ₹80 lakh from them.
The police identified the suspects as Ravi Dhansingh Chauhan (37), Kiran Ram Pawar (35), Vikas Mansingh Chauhan (43), ) Adesh Shanthkumar Jadhav (22), and Sarjirao Kishan Chauhan (36) from Maharashtra, and Narsingh Madi (32) from Odisha.
In all, the Cyberabad Metropolitan Police also seized 350 kg of marijuana, two cars, and six mobile phones from the arrested.
They have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
The act prohibits cultivation, possession, sale, purchase, transport, storage, and/or consumption of any narcotic substance.
The arrest and seizure came a week after the Hyderabad City police seized 125 kg of marijuana worth ₹20 lakh.
The police said they had credible information about the marijuana consignment.
The six were arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Shameerpet Police and the Special Operations Team (SOT) from the Balanagar zone.
“The suspects along were travelling with the marijuana consignment in two cars — a Maruti Swift Dzire and a Mahindra Bolero. They were arrested near the Outer Ring Road area under the Shameerpet police jurisdiction,” a Shameerpet police officer told South First.
“We recovered a total of 170 packets of marijuana, each weighed 2 kg, while searching the cars,” the officer added.
The police alleged that the arrested were transporting the marijuana consignment to the Solapur district of Maharashtra via Hyderabad from the Malkangiri district in Odisha.
According to the officer, the arrested told them during questioning that they would have sold it to a local peddler for ₹20,000 per kg.
The officer added that Narsingh Madi was the main supplier and Ravi Dhansingh Chauhan was the main receiver in the operation.
“The accused had been running the illicit transportation of marijuana from Odisha to Maharashtra for a few months to earn easy money,” he said.
According to the police, Madi used to procure marijuana from cultivators in Malkangiri and supply it to sellers in different states.
“Chauhan used to sell the marijuana, procured from Madi, in Maharashtra to local peddlers,” the officer explained.
“Recently, Chauhan gave an order of 800 kg marijuana to Madi. The five from Maharashtra were returning from Odisha after procuring 350kg of cannabis,” the police officer said.
