The Cyberabad Police in the early hours of Friday, 22 July, arrested an intercity gang of vehicle-lifters from the PDP-X Road in Rajendra Nagar in Hyderabad.

The gang allegedly stole 46 two-wheelers worth ₹50 lakh in the last 10 months.

While four members of the gang, including two juveniles and a teenager, were apprehended by the police, two others — Saddam and Rizwan — are said to be absconding.

The police identified the two arrested adults as Mohammed Ashwaq (20) alias Kabeer, and Mohammed Akber (19).

The Rajendra Nagar police, conducting a joint operation with the Special Operations Team (SOT) from Shamshabad, booked them under IPC Section 379 (committing theft with a dishonest intention).

Habitual offenders

According to the police, Ashwaq was the kingpin of the gang, and the arrested accused were his friends.

“Akber was arrested in January 2022 by the Asif Nagar police in another case. But even after being released, he continued stealing vehicles,” the police said.

They added that all the accused were residents of Hyderabad and school dropouts, and that they used to work as daily-wage labourers before stepping into the world of two-wheeler theft.

“As their earnings were not sufficient to fulfil their desires, they took the path of crime to earn easy money,” the police said.

During the execution of their plan, one accused used to signal a partner to watch the surroundings.

After getting a nod, they would start the bike and flee the spot, the police said.

Mohammed Akber was already arrested in January 2022 by Asif Nagar police.

They added that the gang used to operate around the main roads and market areas of Cyberabad, Rachakonda, and the Hyderabad Commissionerate.

Apart from Hyderabad, the accused used to sell the stolen vehicles in the Kamareddy town of the Nizamabad district and in the Vikarabad district to dealers for ₹15,000-30,000, the police said.

“After producing them in the court today, we will seek a remand of 14 days,” SOT Inspector Venkat Reddy told South First on Saturday.
