Hyderabad Jubilee Hills police arrest 2 of 5 accused who thrashed man for talking to a woman; deny BRS MLA PA allegations

Two men have been arrested for attacking a person in Yusufguda after a video of the incident was circulated on social media, the Jubilee Hills police in Hyderabad said on Wednesday, 11 October

The duo — identified as Bhaskar and Lalith — was arrested after the police suo motu registered a case for attempted murder after the video was uploaded on social media.

The police have registered a case under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting while armed with a deadly weapon), and 149 (unlawful assembly with a common goal) against the five accused.

The cops, meanwhile, refuted the claim that one of the assailants was the personal assistant of Jubilee Hills MLA Mangati Gopinath.

However, they also said that a search had been launched for three more people seen in the video.

The incident

The nearly-one-minute video showed the group of youngsters attacking a man, later identified as Chandu, who was sitting on the road.

One of the attackers, identified as Bhaskar — and alleged to be the MLA’s personal assistant — was seen beating Chandu with a piece of wood while others took turns slapping and kicking him.

Some people were seen trying to deter Bhaskar, but he continued striking Chandu, a native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

The police said the incident took place early in the morning of Sunday, 8 October, in the Krishna Nagar area of Yousufguda.

“Around 2 am on Sunday, Chandu was speaking to a woman when Lalith and the others came and asked him about his presence in the residential area,” Jubilee Hills Police Station’s Station House Officer (SHO) P Ravindra Prasad told South First.

“An argument broke out between Chandu and others, and the former pushed Lalith’s bike. This led to a fight, during which Chandu hit Bhaskar’s head with a stone. He sustained an injury, which required five stitches,” said the SHO.

He added that after being hit, Bhaskar and his four friends started beating Chandu. “We also spoke to the woman who was with Chandu,” the SHO added.

‘Not MLA’s PA’

Several reports claimed that Bhaskar was the personal assistant of MLA Gopinath, but the police denied it. Meanwhile, pictures of Bhaskar standing behind the MLA were circulated on social media platforms.

Prasad, however, said, “He is only a supporter and not the PA of MLA Gopinath. In his statement, he told us that he attended events of the MLA and was grateful to receive the benefits of the Dalit Bandhu scheme.”

The police are now trying to contact Chandu, who might have returned to Guntur. “Right now, Chandu is out of contact. He received treatment at Gandhi Hospital and it seems he has left for his village in Guntur,” said the SHO.
