The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) took up the project of the park — spread over 18 acres — as part of its lake development and beautification efforts with an estimated cost of ₹35.6 crore.
Built in 1920, Gandipet is around 15 km from the city. Over the years, the Gandipet lake had lost its beauty and greenery because of a lack of recreational facilities.
Two years ago, the HMDA took up the garden beautification works from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to commemorate its centenary.
The HMDA is said to have carried out the construction of the park in such a manner that the water quality of the reservoir was not compromised.
The water body was apparently not affected directly or indirectly irrespective of the work carried out in the landscape park.
The HDMA reportedly developed the lake as an eco-friendly recreational tourist destination by integrating it with nature and seamless green cover with the help of the latest and best components.
The entrance pavilion includes 12 identical arches that welcome you into a driveway made up of a cobblestone pathway.
The central pavilion has ticketing counters with a four-metre-diameter globe and four-way columns in a semi-circular shape.
An entrance plaza, an open-air theatre with a 1,200-seating capacity, a picnic zone in a cocoon shape surrounded by continuous planter boxes, walkways and art pavilions, a flower terrace, a viewing deck, kids play area and 10 gazebos, food courts, and toilet blocks have been built to enhance the park and for people to enjoy day-long picnics on Sundays and holidays.
The project was completed quite some time ago, but the authorities had apparently been delaying its inauguration for dates from KTR.
