Several groups in Hyderabad held demonstration, protesting the Delhi police brutality against agitating students.
Synopsis: Anger was the underlying emotion as several groups stepped out to protest against the Delhi Police’s high-handedness that did not spare even girls on Monday, 20 July.
Multiple demonstrations were held in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 21 July, condemning the police brutality against the student protesters at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The Delhi police had resorted to baton-charging and firing tear gas shells as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) attempted a march to Parliament to further press their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for the botched conduct of NEET and CBSE examinations.
People gathered at the Hyderabad Press Club in Somajiguda with placards and flags after an NGO, Swayam Krushi, issued a call for protest. In attendance was retired IAS officer Akunuri Murali, who declared, “Hyderabad demands resignation of Prime Minister Modi. Modi deserves to back out.”
At Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Gachibowli, Hyderabad-based artists organised an ‘Artists Resistance’ demonstration separately. Performances included a street play on police brutality and a drag performance of Telangana protest music.
Protesters demanded an accountable government for a healthy democracy.
Police foiled Left-wing student groups’ plan to take out a rally to the Lok Bhavan. Several participants were detained. The videos of police dragging protesters away have since gone viral on social media, drawing criticism against the Congress government for suppressing dissent in the state.
Organisations Voices of Earth and Fridays for Future called for a demonstration at 5 pm at the Ambedkar Statue. Over 500 people participated in the gathering. People raised slogans against police action in Delhi, with several displaying copies of the Constitution and the works of Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule.
Another protest meet was called by the Disha Students Organisation and Naujawan Bharat Sabha at 5:30 pm near the People’s Plaza against the Delhi Police’s violence on students. The demonstration drew a large crowd that continued to grow despite the rain.
Protesters braved heavy downpour at the Ambedkar statue and People’s Plaza. They raised slogans demanding education reforms and accountability from the Union Government.
