On Friday, 2 February, the Hyderabad City Crime Control Station (CCS) police apprehended a suspect who duped the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation of a substantial sum exceeding ₹21 crore between 2015 and 2021. He has been on the run since 2021.
The accused, identified as Vaddanu Suneel, hails from Quthbullapur in the Rangareddy district. He purportedly operated under the guise of an advertising agency, Go Rural India Pvt Ltd, and a proprietary firm named, Go Rural India.
The agency was registered in the name of his wife Mrudula, and it secured the tender contract for advertising on metro express and metro deluxe TSRTC buses for the Hyderabad and Secunderabad region in 2015.
Delving into the details, a TSRTC official informed South First, “The tender contract was given from October 2015 to October 2020. There is a licence fee to be paid, depending on the buses, under TSRTC rules and the accused was postponing the payment. In 2021, he requested another year and it was extended, but the owners of the agency fled. They had not responded to the notices of TSRTC. After verifying within the department about the amount pending, the TSRTC raised a complaint with the Hyderabad Crime Control Station in October 2023.”
It is believed that he was hiding in Khammam district for two years. However, on Friday, the CCS team, who had been keeping an eye on his house in Hyderabad, received an alert that he was in the city, and nabbed him.
B Babu Rao, ACP of the CCS team, told South First, “A case was registered under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and cheating the TSRTC of ₹21,72,27,395 — ₹10,74,89,006 from the Hyderabad region and ₹10,97,38,389 from the Secunderabad region.”
The betrayal was unraveled by the current Managing Director, VC Sajjanar.
Sajjanar, a former senior IPS officer who assumed leadership of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation in 2021, directed the cessation of advertisements on RTC buses.
Upon scrutinising TSRTC’s financials, he discovered the alleged deception by the accused and promptly issued orders to revoke his licence. Despite the earlier extension, TSRTC officials revoked the licence mid-year.
Legal notices had been dispatched to the accused since 2021, explaining that the total fee encompasses the licence payments due to the TSRTC from 2015 until the middle of 2021, the TSRTC official explained.
