The Telangana police on Thursday, 5 November arrested four women in an alleged illegal lending racket that targeted cash-strapped borrowers, including elderly people, employees and businesspersons, by offering large loans, collecting heavy interest in advance and retaining signed blank cheques and financial documents. Seven people have been arrested in the case so far, while four others are absconding.
The Special Operations Team of the LB Nagar Zone, Hyderabad, along with the LB Nagar police, arrested Kumbam Nagamma (48), Kandela Gangamma (45), Kandela Mangamma alias Rani (36) and Adulla Anusha (32).
On 26 October, the police arrested Kandela Shiva Kumar alias Varun (24), Vagrigiri Indramma alias YV Indra (38) and Gaikwada Swapna (32).
Malkajgiri Commissioner B Sumathi said the gang approached people through middlemen and acquaintances, promising them large loans. It allegedly collected heavy interest upfront and disbursed only a portion of the promised amount to several borrowers. The accused then demanded additional payments, claiming that these would help secure a larger loan.
The accused allegedly collected signed blank cheques, bonds and promissory notes worth far more than the amounts they lent. They retained the documents even after borrowers claimed to have repaid the loans and demanded fresh payments. Those who questioned the demands faced threats of criminal cases and physical harm, the police said.
