Synopsis: Heavy rains lashed Hyderabad on 8-9 June as the southwest monsoon arrived with force, causing severe waterlogging in IT hubs like Gachibowli, Madhapur, and low-lying areas. Traffic came to a standstill, offices and schools were disrupted, and two youths died due to electrocution. Daily life was thrown into chaos with commuters stranded for hours. More showers are forecast in the coming days.

The southwest monsoon made a strong entry into Telangana, unleashing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over Hyderabad and surrounding areas on 8 and 9 June, bringing the city to a standstill and exposing long-standing infrastructure challenges.

Several parts of the city recorded intense showers, with Vinayak Nagar in the western zone receiving a massive 98.5 mm of rainfall in a short span.

The citywide average hovered around 24.5 mm, but the downpour was enough to overwhelm the drainage system, leading to severe waterlogging in key localities.

Daily life hit

Major IT hubs — Gachibowli, Madhapur, Hitech City, and the Financial District — were among the worst hit. Waterlogged roads and underpasses caused massive traffic snarls during the evening rush hour on Tuesday.

Commuters reported spending hours stuck on flyovers and arterial roads, with vehicles stalling in knee-deep water. Cyberabad police and GHMC teams were deployed to clear major junctions, but normalcy returned slowly by Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile in a tragic incident, two people lost their lives due to electrocution in the Old City amid the heavy rains. Mohd Zafar, 15, and Mohd Afroz, 30, residents of Chandrayangutta died due to exposed electric cables during waterlogging. The incident occurred when the two stepped out of an auto as sudden rain and winds led to the wires falling from an electric pole.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from flooded areas and fallen power lines.

On the other hand, many IT professionals faced delays reaching offices or opted for work-from-home arrangements. Public transport, including buses and MMTS services, ran behind schedule.

Some schools and colleges in affected areas reported low attendance or adjusted timings. Street vendors, auto drivers, and daily wage workers bore the brunt, with critical loss of livelihood for the day.

Low-lying neighbourhoods in Uppal, Nagole, LB Nagar, Malkajgiri, Kukatpally, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, and the Old City experienced flooding. Water entered homes in some pockets, and overflowing drains added to the misery.

Waterlogging hit several roads across the city, with disruptions concentrated in the IT corridor. Knee-deep water submerged the Nayani Narsimha Reddy Steel Bridge connecting Domalguda and Musheerabad. Thunderstorms and heavy rain triggered traffic jams at multiple locations.

Forecast

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain with thundershowers and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) for the next few days. A yellow alert remains in place for several Telangana districts, including Hyderabad, with the possibility of heavy spells in isolated areas.

Falling trees damaged lines and poles, cutting power supply across several key areas including Chanchalguda, Malakpet, Kukatpally, Chandanagar, Gachibowli, Narayanguda, and RTC X Roads. Teams from TGSPDCL worked overnight to restore supply.

TGSPDCL also issued a work-safety advisory to field staff.

GHMC and Hyderabad traffic police have appealed to citizens to avoid low-lying areas, underpasses, and drains. Officials are on high alert, with disaster response teams ready. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s team is monitoring the situation closely.
