Heatwave intensifies in Telangana; Dahegaon records highest temperature at 46.5°C

Southern districts recorded comparatively lower temperatures ranging between 37°C and 39°C, remaining below normal levels.

Synopsis: Heatwave conditions gripped Telangana on 25 May, with districts like Kumuram Bheem, Mancherial, Suryapet, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam crossing 45°C. Dahegaon recorded the highest at 46.5°C. The state average stood at 42.9°C, above normal. 16 deaths have been reported, prompting ex-gratia relief and government directives for precautionary measures.

Heatwave conditions intensified across several parts of Telangana on Monday, 25 May, with Kumuram Bheem, Mancherial, Suryapet, Bhadradri Kothagudem and Khammam districts recording temperatures above 45°C, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS).

The highest maximum temperature in the State was recorded at Dahegaon mandal headquarters in Kumuram Bheem district at 46.5°C. Dandepally in Mancherial and Maddirala in Suryapet registered 46.4°C each, while Aswaraopeta in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Enkuru in Khammam, Eturunagaram in Mulugu and Munugode in Nalgonda recorded 46.3°C.

The average maximum temperature across Telangana stood at 42.9°C, which was 0.9 degrees above normal. Several districts in north and eastern Telangana reported departures of over two degrees Celsius from normal temperatures.

Bhadradri Kothagudem recorded the highest positive departure at 4°C above normal, followed by Khammam at 3.1°C and Mulugu at 2.8°C. Suryapet and Komaram Bheem Asifabad districts also witnessed temperatures nearly three degrees above seasonal averages.

Hyderabad cooks at 42.7°C

In the Greater Hyderabad region, the maximum temperature touched 42.7°C at Golconda, while Uppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri recorded 42.4°C. Rangareddy district registered 43.1°C.

Southern districts such as Jogulamba Gadwal, Wanaparthy and Narayanpet recorded comparatively lower temperatures ranging between 37°C and 39°C, remaining below normal levels.

The report classified districts recording temperatures of 45°C and above under the “warning” category, indicating severe heat conditions in northern and eastern parts of the State.

Severe heatwave conditions prevailing across Telangana this summer have reportedly claimed at least 16 lives, prompting the State government to announce an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the victims.

Amid rising temperatures across the State, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Saturday (May 23) directed district collectors to remain on high alert and take immediate measures to prevent further casualties.
