NRS leader T Harish Rao addresses a meeting of party workers of the LB Nagar Assembly constituency on Sunday, 4 February, 2024.

BRS leader T Harish Rao on Sunday, 4 February, accepted the challenge thrown by Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for a debate on the floor of the Assembly on who handed over the projects on Krishna river to the Centre.

He said that his party would give a fitting reply that would “block the minds” of the Congress members.

The BRS leader, addressing a meeting of party workers of the LB Nagar Assembly constituency, said that despite the pressure exerted by the Centre, the projects were not handed over to the KRMB during the 10-year rule of BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao.

“We had laid a condition that 50 percent Krishna water should be allocated to Telangana, and Srisailam should be recognised as a hydel project,” said Harish Rao, a former irrigation minister of Telangana.

“Even before the completion of two months of being in the office, the Congress government transferred the control of the projects to KRMB, putting the interests of the state at stake,” he added.

Congress blamed

Harish Rao asked whether it was not the Congress government that passed the Bill to hand over the projects to the Centre during the division of the state.

“It was your Jaipal Reddy and Jairam Ramesh who drafted the Bill. Revanth does not know anything about irrigation. He is making shallow arguments,” he said.

The BRS leader also warned that Hyderabad would have a drinking water problem if the projects were handed over to the KRMB.

This apart, Khammam, Nalgonda, and Mahabubnagar would have difficulty finding water for irrigation and drinking purposes, he added.

Harish Rao said that Revanth Reddy had no right to talk about the Pothireddypad head regulator.

“Revanth, who was in the TDP that day, did not respond to Pothireddypadu, as though his lips were sealed. Look into your past and then talk,” he said.

“We fought in the Assembly against Pothireddypadu. We stalled the Assembly proceedings for 30 days when water was being taken to Rayalaseema through the Pothireddypadu head regulator on the Krishna river, upstream of the Srisailam project. We resigned as ministers within one year in protest against the injustice to the people of Telangana,” said Rao.

‘We are not like that’

The BRS leader said only in the morning did former vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu say that one should eschew abusive language in public life.

But in the afternoon, Revanth Reddy used profane and derogatory language while criticising BRS leaders.

He recalled that in the past the Congress ran away when the BRS asked them to come for discussions on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, on the pretext that they did not come prepared.

“We are not like that. We will come to the Assembly and take part in the discussion. The Congress leaders are still using the same language that they were used to when in Opposition,” he said.

The BRS leader alleged that the Congress government had failed to implement promises like Rythu Bharosa, pension hike, free power supply, and crop loan waiver.
