Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Telangana on Saturday, 12 November, was met with several protests across the state.

The protests were carried out by the student wings of several political outfits, including the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Vidyarthi Vibhagam (TRSV) and the Students Federation of India (SFI).

Modi, who landed in Hyderabad around 1:30 pm and addressed a rally of party workers, dedicated the Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (RFCL) plant in the Pedapalli district to the nation.

He also laid the foundation stone for three highway projects and inaugurated a new rail line from Bhadrachalam Road to Sattupalli in the Khammam district.

The protests came amid several banners saying “Modi no Entry to Telangana”, questioning his unfulfilled promises to the state and his demonetisation policy, popping up at several places in Hyderabad.

As a mark of protest, several youngsters from the Telangana Handeva Youth Force released black balloons at the Charminar, the KBR National Park in Jubilee Hills, and Banjara Hills.

They also displayed placards that said “Go back Modi.. No entry to Telangana”, and chanted similar slogans.

Around 50 protestors from the TRSV clashed with the cops and were detained by the Amberpet police at the Arts College Osmania University while on their way to KBR Park.

“We wanted to remind the Union government led by Modi of his fake promises, including employment, the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR Park), textile park, IIM, and funds for several projects in Telangana. He has not fulfilled any of his promises,” TRS leader Gellu Srinivas Yadav, who was one of the people detained, told South First.

He added that the prime minister was in Telangana only for vanity. “He only cares about photoshoots and not about development,” said Yadav.

Trade-union leaders detained

As per local reports, Singareni trade union leaders were taken into preventive custody ahead of the prime minister’s visit to Ramagundam.

Several national trade unions — including the Telangana Boggu Ghani Karmeeka Sangham (TBGKS), the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) — had decided to obstruct Modi’s tour in protest against the alleged anti-Singareni and anti-workers policies of the Union government.

The leaders alleged that the company would be closed in the future, with the new mines handed over to private persons.

In the Mancherial district, leaders and activists of various trade unions were arrested. The unions had declared that they would oppose the tour as a mark of protest against the Union government trying to privatise coal blocks.

Similar arrests were made in the Bellampalli and Ramakrishnapur towns.

Meanwhile, coal miners wearing black badges at the underground mines and opencast projects staged a dharna.

They alleged that the prime minister was allowing industrialists such as Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani to plunder the country’s resources, while the public was bearing the brunt of price hikes for fuel and LPG cylinders.
