Synopsis: It is alleged that the driver of the cab she had hailed assaulted her. She was reportedly on her way to the airport when the incident occurred.
A 25-year-old German woman was sexually assaulted at Pahadishareef, a Hyderabad suburb, on Monday, 31 March, night.
The woman was reportedly heading to the airport after visiting her friends in Meerpet when the driver of the cab stopped the vehicle at Mamidipally and assaulted her.
The Pahadishareef police confirmed the incident that took place between 6 pm and 7 pm on Monday. “We received a complaint after midnight,” an officer told South First, adding that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
He, however, declined to provide further details. “An FIR has been filed. We’re not at liberty to reveal anything further,” the officer replied when asked if more men were involved, and the sections under which the case was registered.
Unconfirmed reports said more than one man was involved.
Incidentally, the assault on the tourist came even as Telangana was set to host the Miss World pageant in May.
Additionally, it was reported within a month of three men allegedly raping a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and the 29-year-old owner of a homestay by the Sanapur Lake, some three kilometres from Hampi in Karnataka, on 6 March.
Three male companions of the tourist were also assaulted, and one of them was killed.
According to Telangana police statistics, crime against women registered a nearly 5 percent increase in 2024 compared to the previous year. The police registered 2,945 rape cases (2,284 in 2023) and 5,940 cases for outraging the modesty in 2024.
