Former Telangana minister and Congress MLA Konda Surekha has withdrawn her personal remarks against BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) made in 2024 and expressed regret, saying she should have refrained from making “baseless” comments.

In a post on X on Thursday, 29 October, she said she had never intended to hurt KTR or his family or damage their reputation.

“I feel the need to provide clarification regarding some personal remarks I made earlier about BRS Working President KTR. In the context of the political situation at that time, while criticizing the opposition, I spoke in that manner, but it was not intentional,” she wrote.

“I should not have made those unsubstantiated remarks that I did back then. I have absolutely no intention of hurting KTR or his family members, nor any malicious intent to damage their reputation. If my remarks have hurt them or their family members, I regret that and hereby withdraw those remarks.”

Defamation cases

The withdrawal comes amid a criminal defamation case filed by KTR over her remarks.

On 2 October 2024, Surekha, then Forests and Environment Minister, blamed KTR for the divorce of actors Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu and made allegations about drug use and the blackmail of film personalities. Samantha, Naga Chaitanya, actor Nagarjuna and much of the Telugu film industry condemned her remarks.

Surekha later withdrew her comments about the actors but stood by her criticism of KTR. He issued a legal notice and filed a criminal defamation complaint against her.

Nagarjuna, who had also pursued a case against Surekha over her remarks, withdrew it in November 2025 after she apologised to his family. The case filed by KTR continued. On 11 December 2025, the Special Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Nampally issued a non-bailable warrant against Surekha after she failed to appear for the trial.

Surekha was dropped from the Telangana Cabinet on 3 September 2026, after her daughter, Konda Sushmitha, publicly attacked Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Parkal MLA Revuri Prakash Reddy. At the time, Surekha said she would continue to remain in the Congress party.
