Former minister and senior BJP leader A Chandrasekhar quit the saffron party on Sunday, 13 August, stating that there was no recognition in the BJP for sincere leaders.
He forwarded the resignation letter to the Union Tourism Minister and BJP state president G Kishan Reddy. BJP MLA and party election management committee chairman Eatala Rajender met him a few weeks ago and persuaded asking not to quit the party.
However, he did not relent and submitted his resignation. He is likely to join the Congress in a few days.
For the last few months, Chandrasekhar was staying away from the party activities particularly after internal differences cropped up a few days after the party’s drubbing in the Karnataka Assembly elections.
Chandrashekhar was elected as an MLA five times from 1985 to 2008 from Vikarabad. In 2018, he contested as an independent candidate and lost the election.
In 2019, he unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections from the Peddapally parliamentary constituency. He later joined the BJP.
Chandrasekhar’s resignation is a setback for the party as he was a strong leader from the Ranga Reddy district where he has won five times as an MLA. However, it is expected to give a boost to the Congress if he joins the party.
