Synopsis: K Kavitha on Sunday accused senior BRS leader and former energy minister G Jagadish Reddy of attempting to undermine her within the party, escalating her months-long conflict with the party’s senior leadership. She suggested that he had influenced the party’s silence over derogatory remarks against her; and questioned the leadership’s continued support for him.
Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLC K Kavitha’s conflict with the party leadership escalated further on Sunday, August 3, after she publicly accused veteran party leader and former Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy of trying to undermine her.
Kavitha, the daughter of party founder and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, has in recent months been charting an independent course under the banner of Telangana Jagruthi, though she remains officially within the BRS.
Kavitha called Reddy, who hails from Nalgonda, a “Lilliput” and blamed him for the BRS’s poor performance in the district during the last Assembly elections. She claimed his victory in his Suryapet constituency was a matter of sheer luck, saying, “He just scraped through.”
Touching on the silence of the BRS senior leadership, including her father KCR, brother KT Rama Rao and uncle Harish Rao, following the derogatory remarks made by Congress rebel MLC Teenmar Mallanna against her, Kavitha said that while the entire state condemned the comments, BRS leaders remained silent.
“I know who stopped them from supporting me. I believe in karma, and it will catch up with them,” she said.
Although she did not name the key leader she was referring to, her remarks hinted at the possibility of her brother and BRS working president KT Rama Rao.
Kavitha claimed she had informants among the followers of those plotting against her, keeping her updated on their actions. “I’m regularly getting inputs on what they’re up to,” she said, expressing disgust at how these leaders were made to speak ill of her.
Kavitha questioned why Reddy continues to receive unwavering support from the party.
She further credited KCR with building Reddy’s public profile, asking, “Who are you without him? How can those who benefited when the party was in power now speak against me?”
She speculated that her letter to KCR, which was leaked, might have prompted Andhra Pradesh BJP MP CM Ramesh to claim that the BRS had offered him a merger deal with the BJP in exchange for aiding her release from prison. “Though I know Ramesh, I haven’t spoken to him in a long time. I don’t know what prompted him to reveal this,” she said.
In response, Jagadish Reddy denied discussing Kavitha with either KCR or KTR and said he could not comment on her accusations. He said that in his last meeting with KCR he had discussed issues such as Banakacherla, Kaleshwaram and fertiliser shortages.
With a touch of sarcasm, he praised her “knowledge” of his role in the Telangana movement. He also rejected her accusations about the Nalgonda defeat, arguing that by the same logic he could claim credit for the party’s earlier victories in the district.
Calling himself a disciplined BRS “foot soldier”, Reddy accused Kavitha of using the language of KCR’s political opponents such as calling him “Lilliput” and suggested she was working in cahoots with them.
