The poll body has asked her to submit three alternative names within 15 days, warning that the registration application will be shelved if she fails to comply.
Synopsis: The Election Commission of India has directed Kavitha to drop the name Telangana Rakshana Sena for her political party, citing a wave of public objections to the acronym, it is learnt.
Kalvakuntla Kavitha, the estranged daughter of former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, has no right to use the acronym TRS for her new political party.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed Kavitha to drop the name Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) for her political party, citing a wave of public objections to the acronym, it is learnt.
The poll body has asked her to submit three alternative names within 15 days, warning that the registration application will be shelved if she fails to comply.
Kavitha unveiled her new political outfit on 25 April in Medchal, initially calling it Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS). Later, the name was changed to Telangana Rakshana Sena while retaining the TRS initials.
Based on her application, the poll panel directed that an advertisement be issued inviting objections, a standard procedure followed by the Commission.
The acronym drew pushback from KCR’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). BRS argued that the name echoes Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the BRS’s original name during the statehood movement, and could mislead voters.
The Election Commission had received over 1,000 objections to granting the name TRS to Kavitha. In light of the objections, the EC has now asked Kavitha to propose alternatives.
