In its first decisive move to ensure free and fair Assembly elections in Telangana, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday, 11 October, ordered the transfer of three commissioners of police (CPs), 10 superintendents of police (SPs), and the collectors of four districts.

The CPs transferred are CV Anand (Hyderabad), AV Ranganath (Waragal), and V Satyanarayana (Nizamabad).

The SPs transferred are Rajendra Prasad (Suryapet), M Ramana Kumar (Sangareddy), B Srinivasaa Reddy (Kamareddy), A Bhaskar(Jagtial), K Narasimha (Mahabubnagar), K Manohar (Nagarkurnool), K Srujana (Gadwal), G Chandramohan (Mahabubabad), N Venkateswarlu (Narayanpet), and P Karunakar (Bhupalpally).

Also, the collectors of the Rangareddy, Medchal, Yadadri, and Nirmal districts have been transferred out.

The other officers who have been shunted out are the secretary of the Transport Department, the Commercial Taxes commissioner, the director of the Excise Department, and the non-cadre SPs of nine districts.

More orders

The ECI reportedly has directed that principal secretaries be appointed for the Excise and Commercial Taxes Departments, which are now without a chief secretary.

The ECI also asked the Telangana government to send the names of three officers by Thursday evening for each post that was falling vacant consequent to the transfers.

The poll panel also asked the transferred officials to hand over their charge to junior officers and be relieved immediately.

The ECI cracked the whip at the officers after considering the inputs it received during its three-day review in Hyderabad on the preparedness of the official machinery in conducting the elections.

In fact, the poll panel had expressed its displeasure over the way some officials had been working.

Apart from this, Opposition parties also came up with allegations against officials in some districts and sought their transfers.
