BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao addresses a public meeting in the Nalgonda district of Telangana on Tuesday, 13 February, 2024.

The Election Commission on Wednesday, 1 May, barred BRS president and former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) from campaigning for 48 hours for his “objectionable” remarks against the Congress.

The EC said his remarks at a press conference in Sircilla on 5 April were violative of the provisions of the model code of conduct and its advisories.

The English transcript of his statement provided by the EC in its order shows he used invectives against the Congress which rules Telangana.

In his reply to a show-cause notice issued by the poll authority, KCR had claimed that his words were “twisted”. He also said the local poll officials could not follow the local Telugu dialect.

The order served on him reminded him that he had violated the poll code in the past elections too. While strongly condemning him, the Commission used its constitutional powers to ban him from campaigning.

A Congress leader had moved the poll panel against the BRS chief.

The 48-hour ban on the Telangana former chief minister comes into force at 8 pm on Wednesday.

KTR questions EC

Meanwhile, BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) questioned the EC on why there was no action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

Alleging that there was no action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi even after several complaints, He questioned, “What is this misrule? Are you trying to silence Telangana’s voice KCR? Does the Election Commission of India not hear Modi’s statements?”

“Has the vulgar words of CM Revanth Reddy become devotional statements to ECI? There is no action against the foul-mouthed cheap Minister of Telangana Revanth,” he said.

“Isn’t this Badi Bhai and Chote Bhai’s made-up crime? Why are BJP and Congress so shaken by KCR’s path of struggle? People of Telangana will give a befitting answer to your arrogance and institutional abuse,” Rama Rao added.

After Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, Rao is the second politician to be banned from campaigning for 48 hours in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
