KCR launched the BRS, his new national party, on 5 October 2022

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has allowed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to change its name to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

A communication to this effect was received by Telangana Chief Minister and party supremo K Chandrashekar Rao from the ECI on Thursday, 8 December.

ECI secretariat senior principal secretary KN Bhar said: “I am directed to refer to your letter dated 5.10.2022 on the subject cited (change of party name) that the commission has accepted your request for the change in the name of your party from Telangana Rashtra Samiti to Bharat Rashtra Samiti. The necessary notification in this regard will be issued in due course. [sic]”

The decision of the ECI came as a shot in the arm for the TRS, which has been waiting to go national to play an active role at the Centre.

BRS programmes commence on 9 December

To mark the occasion of the change of the name of the party to the BRS, KCR called a meeting on Friday.

The occasion would mark the commencement of all programmes related to the BRS.

The chief minister is expected to sign a reply of acknowledgement of the change of name at 1.20 pm at Telangana Bhavan and send it to the ECI.

He will subsequently unveil the flag of the rebranded party.

All executive members, party district unit presidents, ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLC of the party have been asked to attend the programme.

Others who will attend the ceremony include Zilla Parishad chairpersons, those from municipal corporations, DCCB presidents, DCMS presidents, and others.

Interestingly, the Election Commission still believes that Hyderabad is in Andhra Pradesh even though it has been more than eight years since the bifurcation of the states took place and Hyderabad became the capital of Telangana.

KCR has big plans

KCR has been waiting for the change of the name of the party after it sent a resolution to the ECI to this effect on 5 October as he is keen on playing an active role at the national level.

As election season has already arrived, the chief minister is keen on making the BRS popular across the country while preparing for the Assembly elections in Telangana, which are due at the end of next year.

At his public meetings, he has been saying that the revolution to effect change at the national level should begin from Telangana.

He has even offered free power supply to farmers across the nation once “a farmers’ government ” is in power at the Centre.
