Water Supply will be cut in Hyderabad for 48 hours between 9 March and 11 March.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on 6 March, Monday, delayed the two-day scheduled water supply disruption by a day in view of the Holi festival.

The disruption is due to the maintenance of the Godavari main water pipeline — known as Godavari Drinking Water System — at Kukunoorpally in the Siddipet district.

The water supply disruption, earlier scheduled between 8 and 10 March, will now be between 9 and 11 March — for 48 hours.

“It will start at 6 am on 9 March and preparations are being made to finish it by 6 am as per the director’s orders,” technical director of HWMSSB P Ravi Kumar told South First.

Meanwhile, HWMSSB Director M Dana Kishore on Monday appealed to citizens to stop water wastage and use it sparingly.

“Those with storage capacity should store water,” he added.

Areas to face water supply disruption

As per the HMSWWB, some areas in Hyderabad will be totally affected by water disruption while others will be affected partially.

The fully disrupted areas are — Shapur and Chintal reservoir commanding area, Jeedimetla/Vani Chemicals, Jagadgirigutta, Gajularamaram and Suraram reservoir commanding areas, Defence Colony reservoir commanding area, Nagaram/Dammaiguda, Keesara, Ring Main-III online supplies, Kompally, Gondlapochampally areas, Kondapaka (Jangaon, Siddipet), Pragnapur (Gajwel), Alair (Bhongir), Ghanpur (Medchal/Shameerpet), Part of Cantonment Area, MES and Turkapally Biotech Park and parts of Kapra municipality.

The areas to witness partial disruption of water supply are — Borabanda, Venkatagiri and Banjara Hills reservoir commanding area, Erragadda, Ameerpet, Yellareddyguda, Yousufguda, KPHB, Malaysian Township reservoir commanding area, Lingampally to Kondapur, Gopalnagar, Mayurnagar reservoirs commanding area, parts of Pragathi Nagar, Nizampet and Bachupally.

Tanker facilities round the clock

Speaking to South First, Ravi Kumar said, “This sudden interruption is to facilitate the completion of the railway line to Siddipet. As our water pipeline is in the way, we have to, inevitably, to shift it.”

Noting that this is the first shutdown in the last five years, since 2018, Kumar said, “We have to stop the water from the pipeline. It is a three-metre dietel. We will complete it in 48 hours.”

He added that the HWMSSB has been spreading awareness — through social media, linemen and meter readers — well in advance among the public in affected areas. “Since 3 or 4 March we have been asking people to be cautious, store water and make arrangements.”

The HWMSSB tanker facilities will be available round the clock, claimed Kumar. “For non-commercial users, it’s a free supply. And for domestic purposes, it’s ₹500. Water will be supplied wherever required.”

The HWMSSB helpline number is 155313. Local General Managers (GM), whose contact numbers are available on the www.hyderabadwater.gov.in can also be contacted for the same.

Citizens cautious

South First spoke to some people in the affected area, some of whom were aware of the water supply disruption while some were not.

“Our locality RWS has been looking after it and making arrangements for the water in the society reserve tanker. In our home also I will be completely filling all the buckets every day now,” Ameerpet resident P Kavitha told South First.

Suresh Reddy, a resident of Krishna Nagar in Yousufguda, said that he has asked his family members to use water for crucial purposes only.

“As the festival of Holi is near, we need to be careful that once it passes we do not stare at empty tanks. Otherwise, we will have to call the water board tankers for extra supply,” he told South First.

It is not just people in residential areas who are being careful. Even shops and restaurants owners are being cautious about using water sparingly.
