A 30-year-old software engineer, under the influence of alcohol, wreaked havoc in Hyderabad’s IT corridor on Monday night, 15 April. He caused six accidents that tragically claimed the life of a young man and left nearly 14 others injured. Ten of them are now under care at private hospitals in Hyderabad.

The police have arrested the accused, Kranti Kumar, and have registered a case against him under Sections 304 (ii) (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 185(a) of the Motor Vehicles Act, launching a thorough investigation into the matter.

Inspector CH Venkanna of the Raidurgam Police Station told South First, “The intoxicated Kranti Kumar, after the first accident, drove recklessly in the wrong direction, causing subsequent accidents, instead of heading home from Mindspace to KPHB. He is currently in custody.”

He added, “Out of the six accidents, over 10 individuals were injured, and tragically, one young man, aged approximately 20 to 25 years, lost his life. His identity remains unknown; his body is currently held at the mortuary of Osmania General Hospital.”

The accident

According to the FIR accessed by South First, a complaint was received from patrolling police officers belonging to the Raidurgam Police Station, Cyberabad Commissionerate, on 15 April around 1 am, regarding a road accident opposite KIMS Hospital in Raidurgam.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found a black Volkswagen Polo being driven recklessly from Gachibowli towards Shaikpet, colliding with three vehicles and causing severe injuries to multiple individuals.

During police inquiry, the accused identified himself as Patharla Kranthi Kumar Yadav (30), a software engineer residing in Nizampet. Suspecting alcohol consumption, the police took him to the police station, where his Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) measured at 550/100 mg.

Further investigation revealed that, apart from the incident in front of KIMS Hospital, the driver was involved in accidents near IKEA Rotary, Gachibowli HP Petrol Pump, and the flyover opposite Pista House. At IKEA Rotary, a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car suffered damages, and at the Gachibowli HP Petrol Pump, a Hero Splendour bike was involved, resulting in injuries.
