Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President B Mahesh Kumar Goud recently received a Black Belt Dan 7 certificate in Karate.
It appears he qualified in a three-hour Karate belt grading test held at YWCA Secunderabad.
However, what does a politician have to do with Karate? Is he planning to take on BRS leaders K Chandrashekar Rao, KT Rama Rao, et al, with his bare hands, as the political ammunition against the former chief minister is fast running out?
The Okinawa-originated blood sport, popularised by the late Bruce Lee with his all-time classic in martial arts film — Enter the Dragon — seemed to have held an irresistible attraction for Mahesh Kumar Goud.
Even though in his late fifties — in fact, very close to reaching 60 — he fought and earned his seventh black belt. Karate at 60? Quite interesting.
In fact, Enter the Dragon spawned a number of Karate fighters in India subsequently. The film was such a big hit. This journalist remembers the trouble he went through to get a ticket to watch the film at the Srinivasa Theatre in Narayanguda, Hyderabad, in the 70s.
Now, back to Telangana Congress. Mahesh Kumar Goud suffered injuries on his journey to his seventh black belt, but he is very gentle and soft-spoken. He is not the type to use Karate in real life.
He is not even given to throwing tantrums at his rivals or indulging in political fisticuffs. In the Karate world, he is, of course, an odd fish. Maybe Karate suits Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy more. But that’s not the way things pan out, would they?
