Revanth Reddy during campaigning

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday, 29 April, reacted sharply to the issue of notice by Delhi police to him and several other leaders of the Congress in Hyderabad for sharing a “morphed video” of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on social media platforms.

The chief minister, who was campaigning for the Congress in Karnataka, said: “I came to know that Delhi police went to Congress party office in Hyderabad and issued notices to arrest me and several other leaders. The BJP cannot scare me by sending the Delhi police after me.”

Revanth Reddy alleged that on top of using the CBI and the ED (Enforcement Directorate) against Opposition leaders, Narendra Modi is now seeking the help of the Delhi police to win the elections.

“He (Modi) has till now been using the ED, CBI, and Income Tax Departments,” he said and made it clear that he would not be intimidated by the Delhi police in this fashion.

“They have summoned me, the state Congress president and chief minister, over a social media post. Its meaning is that Narendra Modi is using the Delhi police along with the ED and the CBI to win the elections,” Revanth Reddy said.

“We will give the answer to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah by defeating them in the upcoming elections,” he claimed.

He also claimed that the grand old party will form its government in Maharashtra, continuing the precedence set in Telangana and Karnataka.

The Delhi police notice

Earlier in the day, the Delhi police visited Gandhi Bhavan and issued notices to several Congress leaders in connection with the case relating to the circulation of “morphed videos” released in the name of Amit Shah on social media platforms.

According to sources, the police served notices to five people, including Reddy in his capacity as State unit president, who posted the video on X.

Revanth Reddy has been asked to appear with his mobile phone allegedly used for posting the fake video on X, according to sources.

The Special Cell of the Delhi Police had on Sunday registered an FIR after the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs, filed a complaint about the doctored video of Shah where his statements indicating a commitment to abolish quota for Muslims on religious ground in Telangana were changed to make it seem that he was advocating scrapping all reservations.

The case was registered under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act, they said. The sources in the Special Cell said that now arrests are likely to follow across the country.

The BJP says that the videos that are circulating in social media are highly doctored, showing that Amit Shah at a Vijay Sankalp programme in Telangana on 23 April had said that the BJP after coming to power at the centre would scrap reservations for the SCs, STs, and OBCs. The BJP sources said that Amit Shah had only said that the BJP would annul reservations extended to Muslims as they were against the Constitution of India.
