Synopsis: The suspension came a day after Kavitha accused her cousins, former irrigation minister T Harish Rao, and ex-MP J Santosh Rao of amassing huge assets. On Monday, 1 September, she said they amassed wealth by making her father and BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao a scapegoat in the alleged Kaleshwaram scam.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) suspended Telangana MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha from the party on Tuesday, 2 September.

The suspension came a day after Kavitha accused her cousins, former irrigation minister T Harish Rao, and ex-MP J Santosh Rao of amassing huge assets. On Monday, 1 September, she said they amassed wealth by making her father and BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao a scapegoat in the alleged Kaleshwaram scam.

She made the allegation on returning home after a 10-day visit to the US.

“The party leadership is taking this matter seriously as the recent behavior and ongoing anti-party activities of party MLC Mrs. K. Kavitha are damaging the BRS party,” the BRS said in a statement announcing Kavitha’s suspension. c

Speaking to reporters at her Jubilee Hills residence on Monday, Kavitha said Harish Rao and Santosh Rao handled key aspects of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. She also termed them “anacondas of corruption”.

Kavitha also alleged that her cousins were working with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to tarnish the image of her father. She said KCR was “clean” and termed the controversy as a conspiracy to damage his reputation. Her remarks targeted what she called the “demons” inside BRS as well as Revanth Reddy’s political agenda.

Defending her father, Kavitha said KCR had never pursued personal wealth. “It pains me to see my father now has to face a CBI case,” she said, after the state government referred the case to the central investigation agency.

This is not the first time Kavitha has challenged her own party. In May 2025, after the BRS’s silver jubilee celebrations in Warangal, she wrote a confidential letter to KCR with feedback from party workers on the event and its fallout. The letter, supposed to be confidential, was leaked, sparking controversy.

Kavitha claimed “demons” around her father had deliberately leaked it.

Over time, her comments strained ties with both her father and the party. She repeatedly likened KCR to a “god” surrounded by evil forces. Initially, her barbs were seen as aimed at her brother and BRS working president KT Rama Rao. But, on Monday, she openly named Harish Rao and Santosh Rao for the first time, crossing the red line.

After her press conference, KCR reportedly met senior leaders and discussed disciplinary action. By Tuesday morning, her suspension was formalised. Kavitha’s public relations officer was even removed from the party’s official media WhatsApp group, signaling her isolation.

Kavitha, a former MP and founder of Telangana Jagruthi, has long been associated with women’s and cultural causes. Her political future is now uncertain. Some believe she may float a new outfit or join hands with opposition forces against the Congress government.

For the BRS, already weakened after its 2023 Assembly defeat and internal rifts, Kavitha’s suspension marks a fresh crisis.
