In a deeply disturbing incident, 39-year-old Anjali, a descendant of Telangana freedom fighter Chakali Ilamma, was murdered by her 16-year-old daughter and her partner at her residence in Jeedimetla, Hyderabad, on Sunday evening.

According to police, the murder was allegedly triggered after Anjali objected to her daughter’s relationship. In a shocking act of violence, she was reportedly strangled and then attacked with a knife and an iron rod, leading to her death.

Jeedimetla Inspector G Mallesh confirmed to South First that the case involves three accused: Anjali’s 16-year-old daughter, her 19-year-old boyfriend, and his 17-year-old younger brother.

“The incident took place yesterday evening. We are currently processing the case. The 19-year-old boyfriend will be produced before a regular court, while the 16-year-old girl and the 17-year-old boy will be sent to juvenile court,” said Inspector Mallesh.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had met on social media about 10 months ago. The police informed that the process of presenting them would be complete by tomorrow morning.

A descendant of Chakali Ilamma

Chakali Ilamma was a pioneering woman freedom fighter from Telangana who played a prominent role in the armed peasant rebellion against the oppressive feudal rule of the Nizam and the exploitation of landlords (zamindars) in the mid-20th century. Born into a Dalit washerwoman (chakali) family, she became a symbol of resistance for marginalised communities and stood up against both caste and gender hierarchies.

Ilamma’s bold defiance, especially during the Telangana Rebellion (1946–51), turned her into an icon of peasant and women’s resistance. Her legacy is widely remembered in Telangana’s social justice movements.
