Congress leaders inspect CWC meeting site on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Friday, 15 September, 2023.

Ahead of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Saturday, 16 September, party general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal exuded confidence that the Congress would form the government in the five states — including Telangana — going for Assembly elections in November-December as the party was being led by Sonia Gandhi, an indomitable leader.

He was speaking to reporters at the venue of Vijaya Bheri, the public meeting scheduled to be held on Sunday at Thukkuguda on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The CWC meeting is expected to witness the congregation of 84 leaders, including four Congress chief ministers.

The primary agenda of the CWC would be to discuss preparations for the elections in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram.

Venugopal said the Congress would unveil six guarantees that would help it win these elections.

Plan for Telangana

During the interaction, Venugopal recalled that it was Sonia Gandhi who promised and delivered Telangana, which was the long-cherished dream of the people of the state.

It was a moment of great pride for Congress members and the general public of Telangana at that time, he added.

He said Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao pushed the state into a morass of corruption.

“It is the most corrupt state in the country,” he said, claiming that people were suffering at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the national level and KCR at the state level.

He asserted that the Congress would win not only in Telangana but also in the other four states going to polls in the coming months.

He said that after the INDIA bloc held three successive meetings, the national sentiment had shifted significantly.

People were eagerly awaiting the alliance to emerge as a viable alternative to the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

“We are gearing up for 2024, and have already initiated Lok Sabha preparations in various states, which will also be discussed,” he said.

6 guarantees on the cards

He said the elections were taking place against the backdrop of a worrying political scenario.

“Manipur has been facing unrest for the last 130 days, with no adequate response from the governments. The prime minister addressed the issue after a hundred days, which is disappointing in a democratic country like India. Manipur remains engulfed in crisis, and the state government appears to be letting it fester as it has vested interests. Therefore, Manipur will be a key point of discussion,” he said.

“Additionally, Haryana is experiencing turmoil. A tragic incident occurred yesterday where four brave soldiers lost their lives. The government’s response to these matters raises questions about its commitment to nationalism. While it speaks of nationalism, China continues to occupy significant portions of our territory. Our foreign policy will also be discussed during this CWC meeting,” he said.

He said that Sonia Gandhi would unveil six guarantees at the public meeting in Thukkuguda on 17 September.

“We delivered on the guarantees we made to the people of Karnataka within two months of coming to power. We proudly affirm that we will fulfil the promises that are going made to the people of Telangana within one month of us forming the government. The details of these guarantees will be explained to the public in all Assembly constituencies by CWC members, CLP leaders, and PCC presidents,” said Venugopal.

He said that immediately after the public meeting, Congress MPs would leave for Delhi to attend the Parliament session that begins on 18 September.

The other leaders — including CWC members, PCC presidents, and CLP leaders — would disperse to all the Assembly segments in the state. They would present a charge sheet against the KCR government to the people.

Those who inspected the venue of the public meeting Vijaya Bheri at Thukkuguda included party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, the Congress’ Telangana in-charge Manikrao Thakre, TPCC president A Revanth Reddy, CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and CWC member Vamshi Chand Reddy.
