BJP MLA Raghunandhan Rao

The crisis in the BJP’s Telangana unit deepened further on Monday, 3 July, with party MLA M Raghunandan Rao openly remarking against the state unit president Bandi Sanjay Kumar.

He questioned Bandi Sanjay spending ₹100 crore of the party’s money for advertisements during the Munugode by-election, but pointed out that when he (Rao) contested in the Dubbaka by-elections, he had received nothing.

I deserve recognition: Raghunandan Rao

Interacting with the media in New Delhi, he demanded that the party give him proper recognition. “I want to be appointed as state unit president, party floor leader in the Assembly, or the national spokesperson in recognition of my services for the party for the last 10 years,” Raghunandan Rao said.

Rao said that he was also eligible for the post of party president since he has been working for the party for 10 years and added that his caste can be a curse for him in some matters.

“Everyone will see how the BJP will be in the next two months,” he said, exuding confidence that he will win as MLA from Dubbaka for the second time.

Stating that he wants to stay in the party, Rao said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not campaign in Dubakka during the by-elections; nobody helped him. He added that BJP MLA Eatala Rajender joined the party only after the party won the elections in Dubakka.

Rao said that the BJP got only 3,500 votes when its candidate contested earlier.

Taking on the top brass

Rao stated that the party won’t get votes with photographs of Telangana in-charges Tarun Chugh and Sunil Bansal. It will get votes only with the photographs of himself and Rajender.

He said that BJP national president JP Nadda was unaware that the party does not have a floor leader in the Assembly and when the same was brought to his notice, he only asked why and failed to take corrective measures.

Rao stated that he would lodge a complaint against Nadda with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi if there was no recognition for his services.

A sudden U-turn?

Rao said that reports related to the appointment of a new president for Telangana BJP, replacing the incumbent Bandi Sanjay, was confirmed.

However, minutes after his outburst against Bandi Sanjay, Raghunandan Rao tweeted, “As a committed BJP karyakarta, it is my responsibility to maintain loyalty and take action against news channels that are disseminating false information which I have never discussed or been associated with.”

“I am determined to address this situation appropriately,” he said. He later clarified that he did not humiliate Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said that the media aired what was spoken causally during an interaction with them.

He said that he went to Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy’s house and discussed about his Dubakka Assembly constituency problems. He said that he would abide by whatever decision was taken by the high command regarding change in leadership in Telangana BJP unit.

Unity over lunch

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Eatala Rajender and other leaders attended a luncheon meeting at the farmhouse of former MP AP Jithender Reddy, whose “bull treatment” tweet created flutter in the political circles, on Monday.

It was Jithender Reddy who chaired a meeting with other leaders against Rajender a few weeks ago and extended support to Bandi Sanjay, stating that he would continue to be the state president of the Telangana BJP unit.

Jithender Reddy’s luncheon meeting assumed significance at a time when the party was facing internal squabbles.

Kishan Reddy takes swipe at Opposition

Interacting with the media, Union Tourism Minister Kishan Reddy said that both the BRS and Congress were family parties and that their DNA was also the same.

On Monday, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav met Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao at Pragathi Bhavan. Yadav also met Opposition parties recently. Kishan Reddy commented that with the meeting of KCR and Yadav, one can understand who the ‘B’ team is.

Reddy was referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks at the Khammam public meeting on 2 July and said that he had no right to speak against the BJP.

Reddy reminded people that the BRS and Congress had formed an alliance previously, but noted that the BJP has never fought any elections with the support of the BRS. In the future as well, he assured that the BJP would fight against corruption and parties promoting dynasty politics.
