Rahul Gandhi in Khammam

The Congress in Telangana on Sunday, 2 July, alleged that the police and the government machinery were creating hurdles for the people who were looking to attend top party leader Rahul Gandhi’s public meeting in Khammam.

The party’s leaders alleged that this was being done at the behest of the ruling BRS, a charge that has been denied by the police.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MP A Revanth Reddy spoke to state DGP Anjani Kumar about the issue, party sources said Hyderabad.

This, even as former Union minister Renuka Chowdhury slammed the police and claimed that the ruling BRS was jittery over the public meeting.

‘BRS acting in undemocratic manner’

Congress MLA D Sridhar Babu alleged that local BRS leadership was acting in an “undemocratic” manner in an attempt to make the rally a failure.

Khammam Police Commissioner Vishnu S Warrier maintained that there was no truth in reports that the police created hurdles by intercepting vehicles going to the Congress’ public meeting at Khammam.

Except for traffic diversion in the district, no check post had been set up anywhere, he said in a statement.

The official further said false allegations should not be made in the media and social media. Action would be taken if such a false campaign was being spread, he added.

Ahead of the public meeting, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday, 2 July, said the party’s blueprint for a “new dawn” in the state was ready and that 3.8 crore people of Telangana wanted change.

He also said that the Congress was proud of its collective leadership in Telangana.

“3.8 Crore people of Telangana want to change. Shri Rahul Gandhi’s #TelanganaJanaGarjana grand rally shall be voicing their shared aspirations, today,” Kharge said on Twitter.

“The Congress party is proud of the collective leadership of Telangana Congress. Our blueprint for a new dawn in Telangana is ready,” he added.

Congress expecting more defactors

Kharge also said that several senior leaders from other parties would join the Congress and strengthen the hands of the people.

Gandhi would felicitate Vikramarka, who began his foot march near Adilabad, covering 1,360 km in 108 days as on Saturday, party sources said.

At the meeting, former Khammam MP Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy would formally join the Congress.

Srinivasa Reddy and ex-minister Jupally Krishna Rao recently announced their decision to join the party.

The victory of the Congress in recent Karnataka elections has given a boost to the party unit
in neighbouring Telangana.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MP A Revanth Reddy has said the party would end the BRS rule in the state with the rally in Khammam.

The public meeting in Khammam, about 200 km from Hyderabad, is being held for the Congress to sound the poll bugle for the Legislative Assembly elections scheduled to be held later this year.
