The date for the launch of the supply of LPG cylinders at ₹500 a cylinder and free supply of power up to 200 units to eligible beneficiaries in Telangana are expected to begin on 27 or 29 February.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, at a meeting with a Cabinet sub-committee in Hyderabad on Thursday, 22 February, asked officials to make necessary preparations to launch the two schemes.

He issued instructions to the officials to ensure that all the eligible applicants received the two benefits, as promised by the Congress in the run-up to last year’s Telangana Assembly elections.

The state government has already implemented two of the six guarantees — Mahalakshmi Scheme, under which free travel is allowed for women in TSRTC buses, and enhancing the Aarogyasri scheme insurance limit to ₹10 lakh from ₹5 lakh — since coming to power in December last year.

The Chief Minister enquired with the state’s Finance and Civil Supplies Department officials about the challenges and hurdles to be faced in disbursing the gas subsidy either directly into the accounts of the beneficiaries or to the gas agency that supplies the cylinders.

He emphasised a user-friendly mechanism be adopted where the beneficiary should get the cylinder by paying ₹500 only. He also asked the officials to hold discussions with the gas distribution agencies on that front.

He said that arrangements should be made to pay the subsidy amount immediately on behalf of the government to the agencies.

Help for ‘rejected’ beneficiaries

Revanth also directed the officials of the Energy Department to make repreparations to supply 200 units of power free of cost to eligible beneficiaries under the Gruha Jyothi scheme in a transparent manner.

He gave clear instructions to the authorities to extend the scheme to all those who possessed a white ration card and consumed below 200 units per month for domestic needs only.

The Energy Department has been asked to issue “zero” electricity bills to all the eligible beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi scheme from the first week of March.

The chief minister suggested that the officials give an opportunity to the applicants to rectify any errors like wrong card numbers and power connection numbers mentioned in the applications submitted during the Praja Palana initiative. He noted that this would help the “rejected” applicants to avail the scheme.

Electricity bill collection centres and service centres are expected to undertake the correction of the wrong details in the application forms.

The chief minister also asked the Energy Department officials to carry out a mass campaign through flexboards so that everyone would get know about the scheme’s implementation.

The chief minister entrusted the officials with the responsibility of ensuring all the eligible people avail the scheme benefit.

He also instructed the opening of regular counters at MPDO and Tahsildar offices to receive applications continuously from those who did not apply in the Praja Palana programme.
