Apparently with an intent to polarise the Hindus against the Muslims, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, 9 May, described the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as one meant to choose between “Jihad and Vikas” and “pariwar ke kalyan (Welfare of the family) and Janata ke kalyan (Welfare of the people)”.

He was addressing an election campaign rally in the Bhongir constituency in Telangana where the party’s candidate Bura Narasaiah Goud is seeking election to Lok Sabha.

The BJP leader said that the elections in Telangana should help the BJP-led NDA win more than 400 sets in Lok Sabha.

“In 2019, we won four seats in Telangana. Now, listen Revanth Reddy, we are going to win more than 10 seats this time,” he said, daring the Telangana Chief Minister.

‘Congress campaign is built on lies’

He said the Congress, as it had nothing to offer, was building its campaign for the elections on lies.

“It is saying that after coming to power for the third time, Narendra Modi will do away with reservations which is a blatant lie,” he said.

The Union home minister pointed out that the BJP, on the other hand, wanted to enhance reservations for the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Castes (OBCs) by transferring the four percent reservations available to the Muslims in some states, including Telangana.

He said, unlike the Congress, the BJP did what it preached.

“In our manifesto, we have promised guarantees, known as Modi’s guarantees, and we will implement them. We had promised the Ram Mandir and in five years Narendra Modi had not only won the court cases but also built the temple and ensured prana Pratistha of Lord Ram,” he said.

Shah took a swipe at the Congress regime in Telangana for not fulfilling the promises it had made in its manifesto like waiving crop loans of farmers up to ₹2 lakh, increasing Rythu Bharosa amount to ₹5,000 per acre per annum and others.

Invokes ‘minority appeasement’

Dwelling at length on the politics of “minority appeasement” in Telangana, the BJP leader said that both the Congress and the BRS were supporting Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM.

They constitute a “minority triangle,” he said asked whether the BRS or the Congress could stop the onward march of the AIMIM in Telangana. He called them ABC, an acronym for Asaduddin, BRS and Congress.

The Union home minister said that the present dispensation in the state was heavily biased against the Hindus.

“It does not give permission for taking out processions on Ram Navami Day, does not celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day, and opposes the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). It is interested in running the Telangana state in accordance with Shariat and Quran,” Amit Shah said.

He added that they were contemplating bringing Triple Talaq. “These people had not attended the consecration of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya,” he said, implying the Congress leaders.

He also condemned Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for asking what the people of Telangana and Karnataka had to do with Kashmir.

“I want to tell him that the children of Bhongir do not hesitate to lay down their lives for the projection of Kashmir,” he said, drawing a huge response from the youths.

“Narendra Modi had annulled Article 370, as he had promised, and flew the nation’s tricolour there. Modi had ended the problem of terrorism and naxalism in the country, thus making the country safe and secure for its citizens,” he claimed.
