Chaddi gang viral video: One offender arrested after 4 cases registered

The Miyapur police, along with the Central Crime Station (CCS) of Madhapur under the Cyberabad Commissionerate in Hyderabad, said on Thursday, 24 August, that they had nabbed one offender of the Chaddi gang that created panic among the people under the Ameenpur and Miyapur Police station limits.

The total number of cases registered in these police stations against the accused is four — one in Miyapur and three in Ameenpur.

The police apprehended one offender — Minama Mukeshbhai Bharubhai (27) — at the Lingampally Railway Station. The other accused — Surmal (20) — was arrested by the Keshod police of the Junagadh district in Gujarat.

Two other people accused in the case — Vikrambhai Dariyabhai (25), the main accused, and Mohaniya Nitinbhal (25) — are absconding.

The police recovered 8 tolas of gold worth ₹4 lakh from them. The recovered jewellery included one gold ring, one gold locket, one gold long chain, one gold chain with locket, and one stone gold necklace.

Police give details

According to the police, Minama, hailing from Dahod in Gujarat, confessed to committing four offences under Sections 457 (house-breaking by night in order to commit an offence), 380 (theft in a house), and 511 (committing an offence punishable with imprisonment for life) of the Indian Penal Code.

Madhapur Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Gone Sandeep told South First: “The videos of the Chaddi gang attacking houses for robbery went viral two weeks ago. All the thieves belong to Gujarat.”

He added: “This gang enters the city and lives in abandoned areas for two days, as one of them goes in search of locked houses. They attack the houses for theft at midnight. Then they return to their hideouts and later run away with the stolen money and ornaments.”

The DCP also said that there were teams on duty to arrest the absconding offenders.

The viral videos of this gang created fear in people, and the news that the Chaddi gang was kidnapping children was false, he added, also confirming that they possessed no weapon.

The Chaddi gang gets its name from its modus operandi. They are said to dress up in undergarments, covering their face with a handkerchief, carrying their footwear in their hands, and tying their clothes around their waist, so that they may escape quickly after committing a theft.

After committing theft, the gang allegedly hides in the bushes until early morning to avoid detection.

The Hyderabad incident

Vikrambhai Daariyabhai Parmar, one of the accused, was working as a plumber in Hyderabad, said the police.

He reportedly informed the remaining accused that they could come down to Hyderabad for committing theft.

As per their plan, the accused reached the Lingampally Railway Station in Hyderabad on 5 August, said the cops.

That evening, Vikram allegedly took them to some localities and showed them houses that could be potential targets.

At night, they took shelter near the Ameenpur jungle, said the police, adding that they broke into a house a few hours later and fled after stealing gold jewellery.
