Centre blocks Revanth Reddy’s US visit on ‘political angle’; Telangana CM to return from London
While permission was granted for the UK visit, the Ministry of External Affairs denied clearance for the US leg, citing a “political angle”, Reddy said.
Synopsis:Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the Union government had denied permission for his official visit to the United States, citing a “political angle”, after approving the UK leg of his Telangana Rising tour. He will return to Hyderabad from London on 23 August instead of travelling to Boston, while officials proceed with the US visit and finalise proposed partnerships with leading universities.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the Union government had denied permission for his official visit to the United States.
The State government had sought the Centre’s approval for the United Kingdom and United States legs of the Telangana Rising tour, in accordance with policy and protocol.
While permission was granted for the UK visit, the Ministry of External Affairs denied clearance for the US leg, citing a “political angle”, Reddy said.
The State government was informed of the decision after the official delegation had reached the United Kingdom.
Reddy said he would comply with the Centre’s decision and return to Hyderabad from London on 23 August instead of travelling to Boston.
At the same time, he instructed officials to proceed with the US leg of the programme and conclude memoranda of understanding and partnership agreements with institutions including Harvard, MIT, Northeastern University and Virginia Tech.
He will continue his scheduled engagements in the United Kingdom over the next two days, including visits to and interactions with Oxford, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, London Business School and the University of London.
He is also scheduled to meet leading sports institutions and skilling leadership in the UK and seek to formalise partnerships for Telangana.
‘Only goal of visit is to make Hyderabad a global knowledge hub’
The Chief Minister said the proposed US visit was intended to bring leading global educational and skills institutions to Telangana under the Centre’s New Education Policy, make Hyderabad a global knowledge hub, and build on the city’s educational institutions and record of producing skilled human resources.
“The only purpose of the visit was to, as part of the New Education Policy of Centre, bring the world’s best institutions to India, to Telangana, to Hyderabad. They would have been an answer to our youth’s aspirations to get education, skills, and training from the best Ivy Leagues and top global institutions,” he said.
“I have always believed we should all think beyond politics and elections when it comes to nation building and future of the youth.”
Reddy said that he was committed to making Hyderabad “one of the top global cities, where any common Indian can get education and a certificates from Harvard and Oxford, or an MIT and LBS or LSE”.
He maintained that while most leaders in India have wanted to send their children abroad, he wanted to bring the world’s best to India.
“We will make Hyderabad a global knowledge hub. The creation of Universities from Osmania to HCU to JNTU et al made Hyderabad a hub for best Human Resources. A single school, Hyderabad Public School, has shown how we can lead the world, producing some of the greatest tech leaders,” he said.
“The starting of IIT, ISB, IIIT, Nalsar helped Hyderabad attract top corporations and their GCCs. Now, we will make Hyderabad the home for the world’s greatest education and skills institutions to power our 21st century journey,” he said.
